Sept. 9, 2007Dutch make 26-shot improvement
WAVERLY—Freshman Nicole Wenstrand (Essex, Shenandoah HS) fired an 83 as the Central College women’s golf team made a 26-shot improvement in the second round of the Wartburg Invitational Sunday.
But that wasn’t enough to lift Central out of the last spot in the powerful 14-team field. The tourney attracted top teams from the region because it was played at the par-72 Centennial Oaks Golf Course, site of next spring’s NCAA Division III championship meet.
Nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) won with 309-317-626 with St. Thomas (Minn.) next at 322-316—638. Central dropped the most strokes, shooting 388-362—750.
Wenstrand tied for 55th individually at 96-83—179 with Eva Downes (sophomore, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) also making strides, tying for 60th at 94-86—180. Jordan Williams (junior, Pella) tied for 62nd at 90-91—181 with Lindsey Ellenson (freshman, Amana, Clear Creek-Amana HS) 86th at 109-102—211 and Meghan Swella (junior, Yucca Valley, Calif.) 87th at 108-105—213 in the 93-player field.
