Fisher takes discus title

INDIANOLA—Central College standout Jason Fisher (junior, Montezuma) highlighted the first day of the Iowa Conference track and field championships with a win in the discus throw.

The Central men sit in fourth place after one day with 27.5 points and trail leader Wartburg with 53.5. The Dutch women saw a number of strong performances and are in third with 46.5 points, close behind second-place Wartburg (50) and leader Loras (58).

Fisher's mark of 154 feet, 11 inches was almost 12 feet shy of his career-best but good enough for first place. He also carries the best mark into Saturday's hammer throw.

Other first-day place-winners for the Dutch men include Rob Tanzer (senior, Orland Park , Ill. , Carl Sandburg HS) and Greg Foote (sophomore, Maple Grove , Minn. ) in the pole vault. They placed six and tied for seventh with marks of 12-7.5 and 12-1.5 respectively.

Alicia Whisner (senior, Adel, ADM HS took second in the javelin throw with a toss of 148-9, with Steph Hillman (senior, Grand Junction , East Greene HS) taking third (129-2) and freshman Ashley Wiederin ( Bedford ) snagging eighth (107-8). Rachel Boeke (sophomore, Cedar Rapids , Thomas Jefferson HS) took fifth (129-6) in the discus throw while Chelsey Keller (senior, Fairfield ) took seventh (127-8). Kari Hutchinson (junior, Charles City ) tied for sixth in the high jump with a career-best leap of 4-11.75 and also placed eighth in the long jump (16-7.75). Justice Weaver (junior, Moulton, Schuyler R-1 ( Mo. )) and Ashley Feldman (Alleman, North Polk HS) finished in a tie for second (10-0) and seventh (7-6.5) respectively in the pole vault.

The conference meet concludes Saturday in Indianola. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with running events starting at 1 p.m.
