April 14, 2007Central gets sweep at Fort Dodge
FORT DODGE—Central College's Jared Feddersen (junior) and Luke Boyd (freshman) made a triumphant return to their hometown as the Dutch men's tennis team swept Buena Vista 9-0 and St. Mary's (Minn.) 8-1 at Fort Dodge Saturday. The duo teamed to win twice at No. 1 doubles and Feddersen was also 2-0 at No. 1 singles while Boyd split a pair of matches at No. 2. He suffered the day's only setback, a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 decision against Steve Grundhoefer of St. Mary's.
“Jared obviously played very well,” coach Greg Gilmore said. “Luke lost a heartbreaker but I think he learned a lot.”
Also going 2-0 in singles were Chris Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) at No. 3, Nick Rohner (junior, Wichita, Kan., Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS) at No. 4 and Justin Scherff (junior, Denison) at No. 5 as Central improved to 12-6.
“We played great against St. Mary's,” said coach Greg Gilmore. “We came out and swept the doubles. Our No. 2 team (Bliss/Scherff) hadn't been playing that well but they kind of found their groove again. I was very proud of how all the guys played and how they conducted themselves.”
Central travels to Grinnell Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. match. Grinnell blanked the Dutch at Pella last year 7-0.
