March 31, 2007Dutch split at Decorah
DECORAH— The Central College men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday in Decorah. The Dutch defeated Loras 6-3 after falling to Luther 8-1.
“Luther is a strong team,” said coach Greg Gilmore . “But we had some guys play some really great matches.”
Central's lone win came at the No. 6 singles position from Tyler Cobb (senior, Humboldt, Ill. , Mattoon HS) with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 decision.
“That was a good showing for him,” said Gilmore. “It was a great win against a great team.”
The Dutch saw more luck against Loras with wins from Luke Boyd (freshman, Fort Dodge) , Chris Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) , Devin Bates (senior, Mattoon , Ill.) , and Joel Druvenga (sophomore, Spencer) in singles. Jared Feddersen (junior, Fort Dodge) and Boyd as well as Bates and Nick Rohner (junior, Wichita , Kan. , Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS) teamed up for wins in doubles.
“Our doubles play was really strong against Loras,” said Gilmore. “We did some really good things today.”
Saturday's split moves the team to 10-6 on the season. The Dutch are off until Thursday April, 12 when they will travel to Indianola for a match up against Iowa Conference foe Simpson at 3:30 p.m.
