Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) rallies to beat rival Fontbonne (Mo.) in Pella softball regional
PELLA (IOWA)—The Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) Bears rallied from an early two-run deficit to top the Fontbonne (Mo.) Griffins 3-2 at the Pella Regional.
The two schools that are separated by a single street were separated by a single run, as a sixth-inning RBI double by right fielder Maggie Mullen gave Washington-St. Louis a lead it would not relinquish.
Fontbonne got out of the gates fast, scoring two runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by designated player Kourtney VonBehren. The blast was her first of the year. Washington-St. Louis responded in the third inning with a solo home run by Sondra Polonsky, her fourth. The Bears tied the game in the fifth inning by playing small ball, advancing a runner to second before Polonsky delivered a run-scoring double to left center.Washington-St. Louis took the lead in the sixth inning on the Mullen double, which allowed starting pitcher Claire Voris to close the door in the seventh and finish with a complete-game victory.
Washington-St. Louis improves to 32-10-1 and plays top-ranked Linfield (Ore.) (42-2) Friday at 2 p.m.
Fontbonne drops to 29-9 and meets Anderson (Ind.) Friday at 10 a.m.
