#1 Linfield (Ore.) shuts out Anderson (Ind.) to open Pella softball regional
PELLA (IOWA)--The Linfield (Ore.) Wildcats shut out the Anderson (Ind.) Ravens 10-0 in six innings to open the Pella Regional at 2011 NCAA Division III Softball Championships.
The story of the game was dominant pitching and big hitting, as Linfield used a one-hit shutout from starting pitcher Claire Velaski and three home runs to top Anderson.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run by center fielder Jaydee Baxter, her seventh of the year. Linfield added another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by catcher Emilee Lepp. The Wildcats broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by first baseman Staci Doucette, her 17th of the season. Linfield sealed the victory on a walk-off, three-run home run in the sixth inning by Lepp. The blast raised her season total to 26 home runs.
Anderson recorded its only hit of the morning in the top of the sixth inning on a bunt single by second baseman/right fielder Amy Wuestefeld.
Linfield improves to 42-2 and plays the winner of Thursday’s noon game between Fontbonne (Mo.) (29-8) and Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) (30-9-1) Friday at 2 p.m.
Anderson drops to 28-14 and meets the Fontbonne-Washington loser Friday at 10 a.m.
