Luther overpowers St. Scholastica, 8-1

The top-seeded Luther College softball team toppled the College of St. Scholastica 8-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Pella, Iowa Regional Softball Tournament Friday.

The Iowa Conference champion Norse (37-6) jumped on top with two runs in the opening frame and added another in the second. St. Scholastica center fielder Merryssa Tiedeman got the Saints (32-11) on the board with a solo home run in the top of the third, but the Saints’ bats were quiet for the rest of the game as Luther pitcher Becca Girvan stuck out 10 and walked one as while giving up three hits.

Luther’s Kelsey Kittleson blasted a grand slam over the left field fence in the sixth as the Norse added five insurance runs in that frame to round out scoring.

Luther advances to Saturday’s 10 a.m. game against the winner of a Friday contest between Coe College and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.). St. Scholastica comes back Friday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game against the loser of a Friday game between the University of Wis.-River Falls and tourney host Central College.
