High School: Urbandale

Why Central?
I actually transferred to Central after my freshman year at the University of Iowa. When I began the transfer process, I knew I wanted to go to a smaller school where I would get more interaction with my professors. After talking to a couple of the professors during my visit, I knew Central would be the place where I could get what I wanted! As for volleyball, Coach Clayberg and my teammates made the choice much easier with their friendliness and acceptance of me. Besides, it doesn’t hurt that Central is only a few blocks away from Jaarsma’s Bakery!

Summer job
This past summer I spent most of my time getting observation hours for physical therapy school.  When I wasn’t in the hospitals and clinics getting the hours, I worked at my parents’ company, Kamen Granite and Marble Tops. I love my parents to death but that might just be a bit too much time spent with them!

Favorite professor and why
Dr. Mark Mills has been my favorite professor at Central! In class, he made sure that his lectures were straight forward so what he taught us in class was on the test and there wasn’t any trickery.  Being a student-athlete causes me to miss some school, but Dr. Mills was extremely flexible in working with my schedule to ensure I never fell behind in his class. On top of that, he is a very nice, approachable teacher that never got annoyed with the ridiculous amount of questions I had on my math homework.

In your iPod
I literally have everything on my iPod from country to rap except hard metal! Lately, I’ve mostly been listening to Timeflies and the summer hits.

You’re majoring in exercise science because…
I am planning on going to go to physical therapy school so I wanted a science major. I decided to go with exercise science instead of biology because I liked the angle on exercise/sports that it offered over biology!

Funniest person on the team and why
Madii Maddox for sure! She is one of those people that is straight forward and bluntly honest, which is rare to find these days. Everything is hilarious because she says things that others are thinking but wouldn’t say, so seeing everyone’s reactions is even better. The absolute best thing is her impersonation of Dora the Explorer! If you ever see her on campus or before or after a game, please ask her to do it because I guarantee it will make you laugh.

“This season I hope that…”
…Everything falls into place.  Last year we had a lot of moments when we could have been dangerous but we couldn’t connect all the aspects of the game! After letting go of many of the frustrations we encountered during the season, we were able to play the sport we love for fun again. Once we did that, things began to click and Central Volleyball became a dangerous opponent to play against.

Favorite athlete
Hands down, Peyton Manning but Philipp Lahm is right up there too. I think those are the only athletes/celebrities I would chase down the street to get to meet and I don’t’ like running so that’s saying something if I’m willing to run after them!

Place you would most like to visit
This past semester I was fortunate enough to be able to study abroad in Bangor, Wales, which allowed me to travel to many different beautiful places! However, I never got the chance to make it to Africa so I would love to be able to travel to a couple of the countries there.

What do you like about being a defensive specialist and do you ever secretly wish you could play in the front row?
In high school, I actually did attempt to play front row but surely enough, I figured out I was too short and I couldn’t jump. My mom actually broke that news to me early so I could switch to defense and focus on getting better in that area. As for the defense, I think my favorite part about being a DS is the fact that we’re involved in almost every play whether it be receiving a serve or digging a hit. There is no better feeling than robbing a great hitter from getting a kill!

Favorite Central road trip
My favorite Central road trip has to be the volleyball trip to Colorado! In Colorado, we got to experience some tough, different competition on the volleyball court, go to the Garden of the Gods, and go whitewater rafting! Possibly the best part was the fact that the US Air Force Academy Football team just happened to be staying at our hotel as well...I don’t think a single girl complained about that! As for Coach Kent, I’m not sure what his thoughts on that were!

The one thing people don’t know about coach Kent Clayberg, aside from his endless fascination with studying volleyball video, as well as his ability to exist for an entire season living on hot dogs and Dr. Pepper
I think Coach Kent has set the world record in the amount of questions he can ask in one conversation. It’s not bad to ask a lot of questions, but we never know if it’s a legitimate question or a rhetorical question. It’s funny because as a freshman you think long and hard for the best answer. By senior year, you sit there and don’t say a word because even after three years, you still can’t tell the difference. It’s safe to say I’m in the “sit and nod” phase…still haven’t figured out the difference in his questions!

Favorite TV show
SCANDAL on ABC and The Blacklist on NBC. When I want a good laugh, I’ll watch an episode of Big Bang Theory or Friends!

Why you love Central volleyball
As cheesy as it sounds, Central volleyball has become my second family. My teammates have become some of my closest friends and my coaches have become people I can depend on for the rest of my life. Every day they remind me to choose joy and be a blessing in someone else’s life, which only inspires me to be a better person.

“Ten years from now I’ll…”
Honestly, I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow let alone 10 years from now! I’ll be 31 so hopefully I have a physical therapy career, a family, and a dog. Oh, hopefully by then I would have travelled more of the world. Oh boy, I guess we are just going to have to wait and see what happens!

Favorite cafeteria food
There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, in the cafeteria that can beat fresh cookie Tuesday. What could possibly be better than a hot, melty cookie with ice cream?
