Hometown: Ghana, Africa

High School: Des Moines Christian

Why did you choose Central?
It was kind of a last minute decision. I learned about Central about a week before I had to leave for Trinity Christian College through Coach Douma. My parents were in town, so we decided to come and visit and we loved it, so I decided to come here.

You are majoring in Business/Marketing because…
I am majoring in business and marketing because I like the idea of handling a company’s market research on new products and I also like the sales aspect, so I believe marketing is the best fit for me.

Who is your favorite professor?
My favorite professor is Mark Mills because he is a good teacher. He is always willing to help me out with my school work, he made math fun and he is very friendly.

What is your favorite Central College memory?
My first Lemming Race experience is my favorite memory because I had never seen anything like that and it was fun to be a part of a college tradition.

What do you love most about being a member of the Central Dutch basketball team?
What I love most is that I get to spend a lot of my time with my wonderful teammates who accept me for who I am and always have my back no matter what.

More exciting play: dunk or blocked shot?
I think a dunk is more exciting because it gets everyone hyped up.

In a recent Central Close-up, Nile Eckermann said Ryan Kunkel was the most likely teammate to shatter the backboard on a dunk; as one of two Dutch dunkers this season, care to make a case for yourself?
LOL. I think Ryan has me beat on power dunking. I normally like to flush it in. It looks a lot cooler from my point of view.

You have a unique name (Yaw); what is the meaning behind it?
Yaw is not so unique when I go back home because there are a lot of people with that same name. This is given to any male from my tribe who was born on a Thursday.

What’s it like playing basketball in Pella, Iowa, after growing up in Ghana, Africa?
It is a dream come true. All I wanted to do as a kid was to play ball in the United States and I have been blessed enough to able to do that. This town has been so good to me. It always amazes me how everyone on campus has accepted me into this college and wants the best for me.

What is one thing people do not know about assistant coach Joe Steinkamp?
I am just getting to know Coach Steinkamp myself, but if there was one thing I would say it would be that he is not as calm and collected as he looks. LOL. He gets on us when we are not playing well, especially on defense.

What's the best thing about being a Resident Advisor at Central College?
The best thing about being an RA is having my own room.

What is your favorite activity to do in your free time?
I like to listen to music a lot because music helps me relax and takes my mind off of school work.

Who is your favorite basketball player of all time?
I would say Michael Jordan because he did things that are yet to be done again. He was just unreal and he changed the game with his style of play.

Who is the one person, past or present, that you’d like to have lunch with?
My late dad because I wish I would have taken the time to establish a better relationship with him, even though he was never there growing up.

“This season I hope that…”
This season I hope that we enjoy playing as a team and are also able to achieve our team goals.
