Hometown: Pella, Iowa
High School: Pella
I chose Central because I really enjoyed the small college theme. Going to a small school allowed me to have it all. I'm able to play a varsity sport, graduate in four years and have a personal connection with my professors. Coach Wilkinson was also very persistent and showed me how I could fit into the women's golf family.
You are majoring in Communication Studies because…
Communication Studies is a really broad field. Through it I get to learn about how people interact and why they do what they do. I also get to learn about media interactions and I get to develop my writing skills through journalism and other forms. I love that through the program I get to learn about all of these things and more.
Who is your favorite professor and why?
I really enjoy all of my communication professors but I’d have to go with Dr. McGrath. He just gets so into everything we discuss in class, which is great, and he is a pretty funny guy. He doesn’t even have to try to make the whole class crack up.
What was your favorite class that you have taken and why?
My favorite class would have to be a topics course called Mass Media and Society. First of all, Dr. Bradfield taught it, so it was already going to be fun, but the class was all about how television and other media outlets construct meaning. It was really fun and interesting, plus we got to watch television shows for lab to connect meaning to the journal articles we read for class. It was awesome!
What is your favorite Central memory?
I have a ton of great Central memories but one of my favorites would have to be 80’s bowling my freshman year. My friends and I went to a thrift shop and bought a bunch of old clothes and dressed up. We also all put on a bunch of gaudy make-up. It was hilarious!
What do you love most about being a member of the Central Dutch women’s golf team?
I love the family aspect we have on our team. These girls are some of my best friends and getting to travel with them and hang out with them all of the time during the season is a ton of fun. We always manage to have fun and enjoy ourselves.
What is it like to be a star collegiate athlete in your hometown?
It’s pretty cool, but difficult at the same time. Being from Pella, I feel like people already knew who I was, so the bar was already set for me to compete. Overall, I think it has been a great challenge and it’s pushed me to play to the best of my ability.
Every golfer has a “go-to” club; what’s yours?
I love my 56-degree wedge! Anytime I can use it for an approach I get pumped, because I know I can get close to the pin with it.
Golf, in general: relaxing or frustrating?
Both! It’s relaxing when things are going well, but some days are a grind, which gets frustrating. Overall, I’d say it’s more relaxing, though. Golf a great way for me to getaway and take my mind off of things.
What is one thing most people do not know about Coach Wilkinson?
Coach is definitely a little prankster. He’s super fun to be around and it’s awesome that he likes to get in on whatever we are doing when we joke around.
What is your favorite activity to do in your free time and why?
If I’m not golfing in my free time I’m usually biking. I love being outdoors and getting to see some pretty trails along the way.
Which teammate is most likely to outdrive Happy Gilmore?
Taylor Hill! When she gets ahold of that drive it’s going to travel for a LONG time.
Who is one person, past or present, that you would like to have lunch with?
I think it would be pretty cool to have lunch with Phil Mickelson. I’d love to ask the guy how he hits his drives so far and how he manages such an amazing short game.
“This season I hope that…”
I hope that the team can finish the season strong. Everybody has really been working hard and I think we’re on the brink of something.
