Hometown: Perry, Iowa

High School: Perry

Why Central?
I fell in love with Central my junior year of high school. My parents, of course, wanted me to go cheaper, but I just felt gravitated towards Central. I only visited two colleges, but I did not need to see any more. I loved how nice everyone was and felt comfortable with the small campus, coming from a small town.

You are majoring in Business Management because…
I started at Central wanting to be a high school counselor. After my first education class, I changed to more general classes and gradually became a business management major. I am minoring in entrepreneurship as well, because I wanted to own a salon someday. After getting the chance to study in Chicago, with my internship at the Field Museum of Natural History, I finally figured out what I wanted to be. I want to become a Human Resource Manager. The thing I love about my major is I can go anywhere and do anything with it.

Who is your favorite professor and why?
Wade Steenhoek, the director of the entrepreneurship program, is my favorite professor. I like that he does not necessarily ‘play it by the book.’ He understands that the most learning we can achieve is by getting out there and experiencing it.

What was your favorite class that you have taken and why?
While in Chicago, I loved the classes they had for us. They talked mostly about our calling. Before Chicago, I did not necessarily know where my life was going. I knew I wanted to achieve great things, but what did that mean? We got the chance to actually talk about what we feel we are called to do with our lives and our future careers. Chicago was such a great experience.

What is your favorite Central memory?
So many memories, but something I will always remember was getting clinked in the dining center. Our mutual friend walked clear across the seating area, clinking his glass so hard it eventually broke. Both of us refused to kiss, so he grabbed another glass and kept clinking. We never ended up kissing.

What do you love most about being a member of the Central Dutch women’s cross country team?
I love how many great runners are on the team. We all have different personalities, but we mesh together so well. I love that we all love running. A lot of people don’t understand, but we do.

Why do you love running?
I have always loved running. My dad used to be an amazing runner and he pushed me to start cross country my 7th grade year and I have competed ever since. Running is the best stress reliever. A lot of the time I used running to get out of the house. When I am running, my mind is clear and it is something that I have always been confident about.

How many miles do you run in a typical week?
I typically run around 45 - 50 miles a week.

What is your pre-race ritual or habit?
The morning of the race, I like to have a banana for breakfast to prevent cramps during the race. I love cereal, but race day I have to keep away from milk, so no cereal. After the bus ride to the course, we warm up an hour ahead of time and get to the start line. I am usually really excited for the race, but as soon as the spikes are on and I’m at the start line, it’s time to be serious. I make sure to have my watch ready and stare at the guy to finally shoot off the gun. I’d say that’s a pretty normal pre-race story.

What is one thing most people do not know about Coach Fyfe?
Coach Fyfe and his family are great people. He is a coach that does not just care about how we are running; he cares about how we are doing academically as well as emotionally. Running is mostly mental, and if our minds are not in the right spot, how can we expect to run well?

What is your favorite activity to do in your free time and why?
My favorite activity is playing tennis. I am not that great at it and do not understand all the rules, but I am usually really competitive, so tennis is something I don’t take that seriously and am able to just have fun with. I play it mostly when I visit my grandparents in Minnesota, so it is nice family bonding time, as well.

Does being a runner give you an advantage in the Lemming Race?
Good question! I actually have never participated in the Lemming Race. Something about jumping into a smelly pond does not seem fun to me. I enjoy watching, though!

Who is one person, past or present, that you would like to have lunch with?
Right now, I am really missing my older sister. She talks more than anyone I know, but she always is such a sweet heart. I am so happy when I am with her and look up to her more then she knows.

“This season I hope that…”
This season I hope that our team can surprise EVERYONE and make it to nationals. It’s my last year personally, but we have such a strong team this year! I’m so excited to see what we can do!
