I really enjoyed the professors and coaches every time I was on campus. They just seemed like the people that I wanted to be around every day at class and practice. The coupon for a free dutch letter was a big selling point as well.
Favorite professor and why
Keith Jones. He was the first professor that I met on my visit to Central and has continued to stay involved in my academic and athletic life for the last 4 years. He genuinely invests in all of his students and it makes all of his classes great to be a part of.
Favorite Central memory
Winning the conference meet in track last year. We lost the indoor meet to Wartburg and so beating them when it counted and keeping our streak going was a pretty good memory.
Why you love running
My teammates will laugh when they see that I have to answer this question. I guess the best part about cross country and track is that there are no politics, you’re either fast or you’re not. There aren’t refs or umpires, just runners and a clock.
Best course you’ve ever run on
I’m going to look into the future and say the course that we have our conference meet on next week. I’ve been told it’s four laps on a completely flat surface so I am just going to imagine it as a track and hopefully that will make the race seem shorter.
Person past or present you’d like to have lunch with
My Grandpa Whitehead. He was one of the most generous people that I’ve known and always managed to put other people in front of himself. I’d like to have lunch with him now that I’m older and have a better understanding of how great of a man he was.
Favorite part of practice
“Ben-runs” ™ are where we, as a team, run a 4-8 mile route refusing to go up any hill or slope of any kind and turning every time we see one. Those probably make for my favorite practices.
Thing most people don’t know about Coach Dunham
He had long golden locks in his collegiate running days. Also, he is an avid fan of race-walking.
Toughest part of the Central Hunger Games competition
The fact that Leo Bird was a part of the competition. The coaches may not have listed him as a “Career”, but I’m pretty sure he had spent his life training for that day.
Thing you like best about your team
Everyone is themselves. Nobody tries to impress other people. You can always trust cross-country runners to have no shame in who they are (the ridiculous shorts are a good example).
Word or phrase you use too often
“I don’t want to run today”
Favorite Halloween memory
I spent last years Halloween in Leiden, Netherlands and got to go on a pirate ship on the canal, that was pretty sweet.
Artist you’d love to see in concert
Macklemore. December 4. Des Moines. Be there.
