Laurie Sutten Flynn '88
Softball, women's basketball
An integral part of the foundation for Central's softball dynasty, Flynn pitched the Dutch to their first NCAA Division III title in 1988. Her walk-off grand slam in the 1986 regional final gave Central its first national tourney berth as the Dutch earned national runner-up honors. She helped Central finish fourth nationally in 1987 before posting a 21-5 record for the 1988 national champs. Flynn was a two-time first-team All-America pick, team MVP and national all-tourney team selection as well as 1987 Iowa Conference MVP. At the time of her induction, her 0.76 career earned run average ranked second in Central history. She also lettered once in women's basketball.
A Marshalltown native, Flynn was inducted into the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union's Hall of Fame in 1990. She has served as an elementary school teacher and high school coach.
Joe Jaspers '88
Men's golf, men's basketball
A rugged competitor, Jaspers earned eight varsity letters at Central, competing in NCAA Division III tournament action in two sports. He was a two-time All-America and All-America Scholars honoree in men's golf. Jaspers, a Waverly native, was a four-time all-Iowa Conference performer, placing second twice and winning the 1988 league MVP award after setting a new conference scoring record. He led the Dutch to four titles and four NCAA berths, finishing seventh individually at the 1987 national tournament. Jaspers was also a member of Central's 1985 league champion men's basketball squad, winning the team's Mentink Award for leadership and inspiration a record three times. Still an active player, Jaspers is among the top amateur golfers in North Carolina .
Jaspers received a masters of business administration degree from the University of Iowa . He serves as vice president and financial advisor for CUNA Mutual Life in Charlotte .
Scott Lindell '87
Football
A star in the classroom and the field, Lindell was a part of four Iowa Conference championship football teams and three NCAA Division III playoff squads, including the 1984 national runners-up and 1985 national semifinalists. A Hudson native, Lindell was a three-year starter at Central. He shared the team tackles lead in 1986 with 120 and was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree as well as a two-time all-Iowa Conference selection.
Lindell received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. A physics major at Central, Lindell earned a master's degree in electro-optic engineering from Dayton University and a master's of business administration degree from the University of Colorado at Denver . A program manager in surveillance systems at Lockheed Martin Corporation in Littleton, Colo., Lindell has received Lockheed Martin SSC's annual leadership award and annual operations achievement award, and three times was presented the corporation's annual technical achievement award. Since 2001 he's worked in the space superiority area after earlier working in electro-optic systems for remote sensing applications.
Lori Nolte '82
Women's cross country, women's track and field
Nolte won or shared team MVP honors three times for powerful Central cross country teams, despite a series of injuries. A three-time national qualifier, she fought back from career-threatening injuries and illness just prior to the 1981 season to become Central's top finisher in five of the year's first six races, winning two titles. Nolte, a native of Mason City, helped propel Central to its first NCAA Division III women's team championship that season, earning All-America honors by placing seventh. Nolte set Central's two-mile record (11:19) and still ranks third on Central's all-time top 5,000-meter runner list (18:00.5). She was also a three-time letterwinner in track and field, earning high place finishes in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at AIAW state and regional meets.
Nolte earned a master's degree at Iowa State University and a doctoral degree in clinical physiology from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm , Sweden . She received a post-doctoral fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine and later was employed there as a research assistant professor and laboratory technician. Nolte also served as clinical research coordinator at Arizona Heart Institute before becoming regulatory and clinical project manager for MED Institute, Inc. in West Lafayette , Ind.
Still an avid runner, Nolte ran the St. Louis Marathon and hopes to run the Boston and Chicago marathons as well..
