Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 Hello Central College alumni, parents and friends! This newsletter, released the first Tuesday of every month, is intended to keep you in touch with what’s happening on campus and in our communities. Please pass this along to your Central friends.
COMING UP MEET THE COACHES — The Central Club sponsors Meet the Coaches at a free ice cream social in the Graham Conference Center, tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 2. Ice cream is served at 6:30 p.m. and coaches will speak at 7 p.m. If you are not a member of the Central Club, you may join this evening. Fans are also invited to Central’s weekly coaches’ luncheons at the college’s dining facility, the Central Market, in rooms 105-106. Starting Sept. 8, the luncheons will be staged at noon each Monday that classes are in session throughout the academic year. Coaches and athletes will provide brief updates on their teams’ seasons. NAC — The National Advisory Council meets on campus, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 5-6. ORGAN RECITAL — Davis Folkerts ’60, choir rehearsal accompanist, begins his free fall series of organ recitals, Second Fridays at Second, Friday, Sept. 12, at Second Reformed Church in Pella, 612 Broadway St., at 12:05 p.m. HOCKER —The 10th annual Dan Hocker Memorial Golf Tournament is Friday, Sept. 19, at Bos Landen in Pella. The four-person best shot starts at noon followed by a dinner, raffle and auction. Cost for golf and dinner is $100 or hole sponsorships are available for $250 and $500. Dinner only is $30. FOOTBALL REUNION — Celebrate the 20-year reunion of the 1988 Stagg Bowl football team during Homecoming, Friday, Sept. 19 – Sunday, Sept. 21. Play in the Dan Hocker Memorial Golf Tournament at Bos Landen Friday at noon. Contact Greg Vines ’86 to sign up. Following the golf tournament and dinner, meet the current team and football coaches on campus in Maytag Student Center’s van Emmerik Studio. Saturday the team will be honored at halftime of the Dutch vs. Wartburg football game and recognized at the Homecoming alumni dinner at 5:45 p.m. Arrive early for a team photo. After the dinner, connect at Fifield #1 picnic shelter. Hotel headquarters will be at the Holiday Inn Express, 2508 Bos Landen Dr., in Pella. NEWTON — Join Central College alumni, parents, friends and guests for an alumni event in Newton at the Okoboji Grill, 1407 W. 19th St. South, Thursday, Sept. 25. A social reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres in the banquet room of the Okoboji Grill begins at 6 p.m. A cash bar will be available. Cost is $10. Payment in advance is preferred. VOLLEYBALL REUNION — Central College will celebrate the 10-year reunion of the 1998 national championship volleyball team. Festivities will be held Friday, Sept. 26 – Saturday, Sept. 27, during the home volleyball tournament weekend, for all players, coaches, trainers and family members from the 1998 volleyball team. The Dutch host St. Olaf (Minn.) Friday at 5 p.m. and the ’98 team will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. match against Carthage (Wis.). Saturday matches are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A barbecue for the current and past teams and families will be at noon. LUTHER TAILGATER — All alumni, parents, friends and guests are invited to a tailgater before the Central College football game against Luther College, Saturday, Oct. 4, on Luther College’s campus in Decorah. The tailgater will be located in the tent north of the Regents Center parking lot, and will begin at 11 a.m. Pizza and chicken from Mabe’s Pizza will be served until 12:30 p.m.; gametime is 1 p.m. Head coach Jeff McMartin ’90 will give an update on the team. CAMPUS NEWS MILLS GALLERY — An Art exhibition in Mills Gallery in the Lubbers Center for Visual Arts titled “The Next Generation: Students of John Vruwink,” runs through Sunday, Sept. 21. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A reception will be Friday, Sept. 19, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Mills Gallery. John Vruwink ’58, emeritus professor of art, asked former students who have either earned an advanced degree in 3-D art or have continued working in art to contribute to this exhibition, which is in conjunction with Vruwink’s 50th class reunion this fall. The artists span across Vruwink’s 37 years at Central. He taught courses from 1965-2002. Artists participating include:
NOTES @ NOON CONCERT — Central College’s music department has a new Notes @ Noon concert series starting this fall, in which faculty members will perform hour-long recitals. The free concert begins at noon. Susan Odem, adjunct instructor of music, will give the first recital Monday, Sept. 8, in Cox-Snow Recital Hall. Odem will perform works for oboe by Bach, Handel, Ewazen and Saint-Saens. She will be accompanied by Carol lei Breckenridge, Farver professor of music, on harpsichord and piano and assisted by soprano Anne Petrie, professor of music, and Stephen Lane, adjunct instructor of music, on cello. The concert will be repeated Wednesday, Sept. 17, at noon at the Pella Opera House. The concert is free and open to the public.
GREEK ISLES DINNER — A Greek Isles-themed dinner will be in the Graham Conference Center, Wednesday, Sept. 10. Tickets are $15 per person, $5 for children 6-10 and students with a Central College ID. Children 5 and under are free. To make a reservation, call 641-628-5334 or e-mail reimert@central.edu. Reservations deadline is Thursday, Sept. 4. Renee Bastas, a member of Central’s dining services, has planned a menu of Greek food including Kota Riganati (chicken with lemon and oregano), Pastitsio (a Greek macaroni and cheese dish) and Spanakopita (spinach pie) with a choice of Greek desserts to follow. Enjoy traditional Greek meze of kalamata olives, feta cheese and dolmades, while looking at the featured art exhibition, “The Next Generation: Students of John Vruwink,” in the Mills Gallery from 5-6 p.m. Dinner is served in Graham Conference Center at 6 p.m. COMMON READ — A common reading program unites Central College faculty, staff and new students. This year, the college community read A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. A Long Way Gone is about a boy; the country of Sierra Leone, which emerged in 2002 from a decade of civil war in West Africa with the help of Britain, the former colonial power; and a large United Nations peacekeeping mission. Last year, students, faculty and staff read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. WHAT'S HAPPENED IOWA PRIVATE COLLEGE WEEK — Central College hosted 464 students and their families Aug. 4-8. The admission office greatly appreciates the alumni volunteers for sharing their experiences and thoughts about Central with our guests! OTTUMWA— Aug. 8, 16 alumni and friends gathered in Ottumwa for Lunch in the Park to eat and socialize. GOLD — The GOLD group (Graduates of the Last Decade) held an event at the Summerset Winery in Indianola Aug. 10. Thirty-one alumni and friends enjoyed hearing Ashanti perform. Several Ashanti members have a connection to Central including Molly Lehr Blythe ’08, Gabriel Espinosa ’79 and Eric Sickler ’83. MEN’S SOCCER — The men’s soccer team had an alumni match Aug. 23. Nineteen alumni participated in the game and dinner that followed. WOMEN’S SOCCER — The women’s soccer team held an alumni match Aug. 23. Eighteen alumni returned to take on the current team and all enjoyed a meal together following the game.
