The Mr. and Mrs. Alumni Award is presented to alumni couples who have enthusiastically supported the mission of Central College. True representatives of the Central family, this year’s recipients are Brian ’80 and Lori Humphrey Fegley ’80 of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Lori graduated from Central with a bachelor’s degree in education and has additional graduate and continuing education hours in a variety of topics. She is a kindergarten teacher with the Cedar Falls Community School District and was honored as the 2008 Cedar Falls Wal-mart teacher of the year. Brian, a Central psychology graduate, earned an MAE from the University of Northern Iowa in Counseling/Student Personnel Services. He is an income maintenance administrator with the Iowa Department of Human Services in Waterloo.
As a student, Lori was involved with campus ministries, student senate, band and marching band guidon, Homecoming committee and Pietenpol cup. Brian, who is active with the Boy Scouts of America and is also a former teacher, was an R.A., Gaass Hall president, and involved with cheerleading and campus court.
Daughter Allison ’08, graduated from Central with a communication studies major and Spanish minor. She is the events and volunteer coordinator for Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. Son Peter ’11 is double majoring in music and psychology. Lori’s father Carl served as vice president for financial affairs at Central and her siblings Terri Humphrey Gotta ’74 and Marc Humphrey ’76 also graduated from Central. Lori’s mother Muriel shared that Lori used to roller skate around campus as a child and it was freshman year when Mr. and Mrs. Alumni met.
It would be impossible to count the number of trips this award-winning couple has made to Pella. They have served as the college’s biggest fans from afar even in a tough “other Iowa Conference school” area of the state and yet found time to devote their talents to the parents’ council, recruiting for the admission office, mentoring for alumni and students in Central Connections and served as reunion class chairs and scholarship panel participants. They have supported Central financially for 24 consecutive years and 26 years overall. And, they have attended more than 20 alumni events since 2003. In fact, they even volunteered to “work” this weekend!
In their own words, “During our years at Central, we felt a strong sense of community and quickly became part of the Central College family. From President Weller to Marge Van Houweling, we can name a whole host of professors, administrators and staff who helped shape us to become who we are today. Some things don’t change. Our children are now experiencing that same sense of ‘connection’ and are the recipients of the teachings and influence of a new set of talented and dedicated professionals. Central College is truly a magical, life changing place. May its glory never die!”
Congratulations, Brian and Lori!
