English Transitions Program

Students who are otherwise eligible for admission, but have TOEFL scores between 530 and 430 (197 to 117 computerized) may join the Central College English Transitions Program. These students are admitted as full-time Central College students, and begin their studies with a combined curriculum, consisting of regular courses (with American classmates), individual tutorials, and ESL instruction. Students in the English Transitions Program (ETP) have the same tuition and fees as any other Central College student.

We believe that students who want to earn college degrees in the United States will make the best progress in their English if they are encouraged to use English in the way most meaningful to them. Therefore, all students in the ETP are required to take at least 6 credits of regular course work that will earn credit toward the degree. More advanced students in the ETP must take at least 9 credits of regular (non-ESL) course work.

The English Transitions Program works closely with the Center for Academic Excellence in selecting courses that will be most useful and accessible to individual students. The Center also provides Supplemental Instruction sections, in which small groups of students work with trained student leaders who have already successfully completed each particular course, and been recommended by the professor. In addition to this, ETP students meet with individual tutors for each of their regular courses on a weekly basis. In this way, Central College is able to offer challenging opportunities to students who are still developing their English skills, but also provide an abundance of support and insure intensive interaction with native speakers.
