Service-Learning/Community Service
Central College is has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for four consecutive years, the only school in Iowa to do so. The honor roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
At Central, learning begins in the classroom and continues in many different settings outside the traditional educational environment. Students gain experience in other cultures through Central's study abroad programs and/or learn through hands-on experiences as interns in corporate settings.
Each spring, Central hosts a community-wide service day. Classes are cancelled for the day and students, faculty and staff join in serving the local community.
In the classrooms...
A growing number of Central College courses include a service-learning component. In addition to courses offered on campus, students enrolled in international education programs may participate in service-learning projects while studying abroad.
- Students hone Spanish language skills while assisting Latino families prepare immigration forms.
- Exercise science students work with athletes with disabilities.
- Psychology students work with child and adolescent development programs.
- Urban sociology students work with the homeless population.
- Art students create murals in an urban environment.
And as volunteers...
Many students choose to engage in volunteer service that is not associated with academic credit. AOK; Big Hearts, Helping Hands; ACTION; and numerous other service organizations on campus provide opportunities for students to invest their time and talents to make a difference for others.
