"The Core" Requirements

The cornerstone of Central's liberal arts curriculum is the Core, a combination of course and proficiency requirements which ensure that the education of all Central College students is grounded in an understanding of the breadth of human thought and experience.

Please view the course catalog to locate courses that will fulfill the Core, along with complete descriptions of each of these requirements.

Note: Students with a disciplinary/departmental major may not use credits from their major discipline toward meeting this requirement; in addition, no courses used to meet this Core Focus Area requirement may be used to meet any other Core requirement.

Demonstration of minimum proficiency in a foreign language – either by completing one full year (6-8 semester hours) of college-level study or by taking a placement exam that demonstrates foreign language proficiency beyond the required level. Those students whose exams place their skill level beyond one semester but less than a full year, must take and successfully pass the second semester to fulfill the minimum requirement. See the course catalog for more details.

Core "Double-Counting"

Core designations fall into two general categories:

Courses listed with multiple Group Two letter designations may be used to meet only one requirement at a time (although the student may choose which Core requirement to apply the course to). However, courses that list both a Group One and Group Two letter designation may be used to meet both of the Core requirements.

Students with a disciplinary/departmental major may count a maximum of 10 semester hours of credit earned in the major discipline toward satisfying Core requirements. This may include any of the following, provided the total does not exceed 10 semster hours:

Students with general studies or interdisciplinary majors have no limitations on how many credits earned in the major may count toward the Core.
