As I researched programs, I knew I wanted to challenge myself by taking actual classes in a German-speaking university, but I also recognized that I would need support from a program (and some intensive language preparation) to reach that goal. Central College Abroad was exactly what I was looking for.
The Central College Abroad program in Vienna is a German language immersion program for students from beginning to advanced levels. A typical course load is 12-18 credit hours. Our academic program is broken down into six areas:
Central also offers an English language track.
Most students choose to begin with a one or two month intensive German language program at the Goethe Institut, an internationally recognized language school in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. You will earn six credits during the one-month option or 12 credits with the two-month option.

This course, facilitated in Vienna by the resident director and a local faculty member, serves as the foundation for your academic program, providing cultural and historical context. The following required course is taught in German and English:
Courses are offered for three credits.
Central College Abroad elective courses are taught at the Central College Abroad center by Austrian professors. Coursework is taught in German for students at the intermediate level or above. Instruction is in a lecture/discussion format making it a balance of American and Austrian teaching methods. Courses are held once a week and students typically select at least two of the following courses:

The intensive language program on the University of Vienna campus is required for students with less than four semesters of college-level German. Course content focuses on German language, including reading and listening comprehension, spoken and written communication, fundamental vocabulary and basic grammar structures. In addition to required Central College Abroad course, students earn 10 credits for this program.

Affiliate university electives
Students with high intermediate language skills or above (prior to attending the Goethe Institut) may enroll in courses at the University of Vienna. Additional electives are available for advanced German language speakers at the Vienna Institute of Translation and Interpretation, a branch of the University of Vienna.
Additionally, music coursework and/or lessons are available to the Prayner Conservatory for Music and Dramatic Arts. Studio art courses are available at the Künstlerische Volkschochschule for visual arts. Course availability may depend on language level and additional fees may apply.

On Central’s study abroad programs, learning begins in the classroom, but continues in many different settings outside the traditional educational environment — offering you a more in-depth cross-cultural experience.
