Merida Ethnographic Field School

Cultural Immersion and Anthropological Fieldwork

Summer 2012 Dates and Fees
Dates: June 3-30, 2012
Program Fee: $3,121 (Airfare not included)
Deposit deadline: March 1, 2012 ($500, non-refundable)

Professor Jeffrey Bass (Central College) will lead students on a four week fieldwork experience in Merida, Yucatan. Students will meet three hours a day, four days a weekto learn about Latin American cultures and the methods anthropologists use  to carry out ethnographic fieldwork. In between classes, students will carry out small field projects with their Mexican host families and local community partners. Spanish speaking ability not required.

Course information: 6 credits

Students will choose two of the following three classes:

  • Ethnographic Field Methods (ANTH 366)
  • Applied Anthropology (ANTH 465)
  • Cultures of Latin America (ANTH 255)
  • an automatic x-credit (Central College core requirement)

Program highlights:

  • Live with host families that provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Class fieldtrips to museums, markets, and other Merida locations.
  • Overnight weekend trips to archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza and    Tulum, and natural wonders such as cenotes and a wildlife sanctuary.
