My service-learning placement was key to overcoming my fear of speaking French to native speakers. When you have to figure out how to explain the concept of subtraction to an 8 year-old, the French just starts coming out.

orientation/excursions

Each Central program offers an in-depth orientation that will acclimate students to the country's language and culture as they get a feel for their new environment.

Paris orientation

Get to know your surroundings by beginning your semester abroad with a full week-long orientation led by your resident director. Your orientation is designed to give you the tools to begin to explore your new home in Paris. During this time, you will learn how to use the public transportation system, discover Paris through a scavenger hunt, get to know fellow students and finalize registration for classes.

Cultural excursions

Activities and excursions are an integral part of the program, connecting students to the community and Parisian culture. These excursions, facilitated by the resident director, speak to the cultural learning and understanding you’ll gain in your courses. Recent excursions include:

  • A guided tour of the Palace of Versailles
  • Opera, ballet, theatre and world or French African music performances
  • An evening at the Louvre and boat trip on the Seine River
  • A day trip to Chartres, Fontainebleau or Giverny
  • A weekend excursion to the south of France, to Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles or Nice
  • Multicultural experiences like a visit to the National Center of the History of Immigration and tea at the Paris Grand Mosque
