I enjoy showing students the less familiar, the off-the-beaten-track things there are to see.
Every Central College Abroad program boasts a resident director who plays a unique role in students' experience. Directors provide academic advising; teach a hands-on seminar, where students learn about the host city and then experience it first hand, and lead the cultural excursions connected to the seminar class. Central College Abroad takes pride in the personalized attention that it can provide students.
Steef Eman, the resident director in Leiden, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience about Leiden and all of the Netherlands to the program. Steef is an art historian by profession but a student mentor at heart. His expertise is in Dutch art and architecture, and he puts the knowledge to use as he tours the city and its art museums with his students. But Steef’s real passion is the young people he advises through culture shock, rigorous courses and the once-in-a-lifetime experiences they get in Leiden. He enjoys showing students the less familiar and off-the-beaten-track that makes their experience in the Netherlands a rich and meaningful one.
Beginning as an instructor with the Leiden program, Steef was promoted to resident director in 1998, making him the longest serving director of all the Central College Abroad programs. He has a family with two young daughters and enjoys bird-watching, photography and visiting the numerous Dutch art museums in his spare time.
As the on-site program director, Steef facilitates personal growth and learning by offering on-site support, academic advising and a complete on-site orientation to the host city and country.
You'll find Steef...
In the Central College Abroad center on the Rapenburg Canal, a few minutes’ walk from the residence hall and both Webster and Leiden Universities. There, Steef specializes in getting to know and advising his students. Even before they arrive in Leiden, he learns about their backgrounds and interests to ensure they have a rewarding experience.
