Check with your financial aid office at your institution to see if you can increase your financial aid to cover you during your semester abroad.
Because students sometimes do not meet their full loan potential, there may be some aid available to you.

Pay attention to scholarship deadlines; some will allow you to apply for the scholarship, even if you haven't officially been accepted to the program yet.
Apply, apply, apply! It never hurts to try!


Central College Abroad Scholarships
Once accepted to one of our semester programs, we will provide you with information about applying for our scholarships in your online acceptance packet. There are two scholarships that are available to Central students and two scholarships available to non-Central students. They are as follows:

Vance Scholarship - Central College Abroad is pleased to announce the endowment of a study abroad scholarship for students from cooperating institutions who have been accepted to one of our study abroad programs. There will be no more than one $1000 scholarship recipient named per program site each semester.

Merit Scholarship - This scholarship is available to non-Central students who have achieved a 3.6 GPA or above, have excellent recommendations, and have a high motivation to study abroad.

Principal Scholarship - Central College students with a 2.75 cumulative GPA or higher who will be juniors or seniors while abroad are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Holthuis Scholarship - Central College students may apply. Should indicate financial need and explain how study abroad will affect your overall academic program.


Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarships

Adell & Hancock Fund (Up to $2400)
Deadline: March 15
Requirements:

  • Must be a foreign student currently studying at a US university OR must be a US student planning to study abroad during the next academic year
  • Must be in a degree program at one of IIE’s US Educational Associate institutions of higher learning.

Frank Huntington Beebe Fellowship
Deadline: December 15
Requirements:

  • Must be at an advanced level within the field of music or music performance
  • Study Abroad location must be in Europe
  • Duration of scholarship is a minimum of one year (undergraduate or graduate)

Freeman-ASIA ($3,000-7,000)
Deadlines: February 15 for summer; March 15 for fall/year; October 15 for spring
Requirements:

  • Must be an undergraduate who will be studying at least 8 weeks in one of the following countries: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam
  • Recipient will be expected to share experience abroad with their home campus and encourage others to study abroad in Asia

Gilman International Scholarship
Deadlines: Fall and Year Students—April 15th
Spring Students—September 22nd
Requirements:

  • Citizen of the United States
  • Receiving federal Pell Grant funding during the academic term of his/her application
  • Will not study in a country which is currently under a Travel Warning
  • Recipients will be expected to comply with the Flay America Act, which stipulates that recipients of federal funds fly on US Flagged Carriers
    Selection Criteria:
    • Quality of student essay
    • Financial need
    • Academic performance
    • Diversity of award recipients
    • Diversity of Study Abroad locations

Marshall Scholarships (for study in Britain)
Deadline: Early-October
Requirements:

  • Must be an American citizen at time of application and must not be studying for or hold a British university degree
  • Apply within two years of graduating from undergraduate college/university
  • Have (after freshman year) a 3.7 GPA
  • Recipients will take up their award within three years of graduating from college

National Security Education Program - David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship
Deadline: February
Requirements:

  • Must be studying in one of the following: Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, the NIS, Latin American, Caribbean, and Middle East
  • Excluded countries include: United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy
  • Must meet the language requirements of chosen study abroad experience
  • Must study abroad for at least one semester; two consecutive semesters are encouraged
  • After the study abroad experience, recipients must acquire employment with a federal agency or office involved with national security
    Selection Criteria:
    • Education qualifications
    • Quality and feasibility of the study abroad proposal
    • Demonstration of motivation and maturity to achieve goals
    • The link between the study abroad experience and goals of NSEP

National American-Welsh Exchange Scholarship
Criteria:

  • Award available at any recognized academic institution in Wales
  • Scholarship duration is one year
  • Welsh family ties are considered important

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship (largest privately funded international scholarships program)
Deadline: Typically beginning of October (check with your district rotary)
Criteria:

  • Award is tenable at any country where there is a rotary club
  • Preference is given to studies in non-English speaking countries; a limited number of awards are given to students studying in the UK.
  • Applicants must have completed two years of study at a United States university and be under the age of 25.

Spanish Association of the Midwest (Up to $1,600)
Deadline: Typically in April
Criteria:

  • Good academic standing
  • Currently enrolled at accredited Midwestern (IL, IN, MI, WI) university/college
  • Demonstrate superior achievement in Spanish studies
