Teaching Abstract Algebra with ISETL

Abstract of article: This article describes the author's experiences using the ISETL software in abstract algebra courses. The article begins with a brief history of ISETL, as well as the model devised for its use. Over time the author has tailored this model to accommodate her own teaching style. Included are several examples of activities that have been given to students. The author comments on how the activities have developed students' understanding and also highlights the benefits and pitfalls of some activities.

About the author: Karin M. Pringle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She received her doctorate of philosophy in mathematics at the University of Oregon in 1990.
