For-Credit Library Courses

COLL 201P Research Strategies (1 credit)
Prerequisite: sophomore standing or above. Advanced study of print and electronic information sources. Students learn about the organization of information in their field and they become proficient with the core resources in their area of study. Includes thesis development, search strategy formulation, advanced search skills appropriate to their field, crtiical evaluation, and ethical and legal uses of information.

COLL 116 Introduction to the Web and Web Research (1 credit)
Prerequisite: freshman or sophomore standing, or instructor's permission. Introduces students to a variety of resources and skills necessary for effective use of the Web. Topics include acceptable uses, security, listservs, browsers, search engines, Web editing software as well as locating, evaluating, and ethically using information in a scolarly environment on the Web.

Course-Related Instruction

Helping students learn to extend their basic searching skills to succeed in upper-level coursework and discipline-specific research is an important part of our services. If you would like to incorporate library instruction as a component of a course you are teaching, or just want to consider the possibilities for doing so, please contact Beth McMahon (x5345 or x5171, mcmahone@central.edu).

The library offers an intensive Information Literacy Workshop for Faculty in May. If you have an idea for an instructional session for faculty or staff, please contact Beth or one of the other librarians.
