Configuring Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express for IMAP

Central College IT Services now provides an alternative method for accessing your e-mail.  Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) provides access to your mail, the ability to organize your messages in folders, and most important, the messages stay on our server so you can access them on campus, across town, or across the world…wherever you can gain access to the Internet.

Note:  This information provided could be used to configure other IMAP mail clients such as Eudora and Netscape Communicator, but step-by-step configuration will not match up with these instructions.

First, connect to the Internet in the normal manner (dial-up from home, Ethernet in dorms, etc)

From the Tools menu, select Accounts.  This window should be displayed.  Click on the Add button, then select Mail…

This starts the Mail portion of the Internet Connection Wizard.  Enter your name as you wish others to see it.  Click Next.
Enter your e-mail address as you would give it to anyone.  Click Next.

Click on the server type pull-down menu.  By default this will be POP3, but we want to select IMAP instead.  In blanks provided to enter incoming and outgoing server names, type messenger.central.eduClick Next.

The account name and password are the same as you use for dial-up connection and for signing on to campus lab/office computers.  Click on the Remember password if you do not want to be prompted for your password each time you open Outlook.  Click Next.

The Internet Accounts screen should now look like this.  Click on the account messenger.central.edu and then click on the Properties button.

Because of security problems, all outbound mail must be authenticated.  Click on the check box labeled “My server requires authentication.”  Click OK.

When you click on OK the following dialog box will appear.  Click on the yes button.

Unless you have special folders you have created, you can click on OK here.  If you have other folders that you want to see (Ex: You move all messages from a mailing list to a folder called Mail List), click on the folder and then click on the Show button.  When finished, click OK

Optional:  You can use Messenger for Internet Directory (LDAP).  This allows you to type part of the name of a Central College recipient and the system will find the correct address for you.  NOTE: This applies to Central College recipients only.

Click on Add and select Directory Service.

For the Internet Directory server, enter controller.central.edu.  Click Next.

For the Account name, enter "CENTRALCOLLEGE\" without the quotes, and then your network username.  Enter your network password for the password.  Click Next.
To have the system look up e-mail addresses it doesn’t recognize, click Yes.  Click Next.

The service has been configured.  Click Finish to save.
From the Tools menu, select Accounts.  Click on the Directory Services tab.  Select controller.central.edu, then click the Properties button.  Click on the Advanced tab and type "dc=central;dc=edu" (without the quotes) in the Search Base field.  Click OK, then click Close.
