Chamber Singers to sing at Salisbury House
The Central College Chamber Singers will perform at the Salisbury House as part of their distinguished 2007-08 Chamber Music Series Friday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots are being collected by Student Activities in conjunction with the Marion County U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in Maytag Student Center’s atrium. Place new unwrapped toys in the box by the tree. The toy drive goes through Friday, Dec. 14.

Flying Pans Christmas concert rescheduled
The Central College Flying Pans Steel Band, directed by Stan Dahl (music), will perform its third annual Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m., in Graham Conference Center Banquet Room. This concert was postponed from Saturday, Dec. 1, because of inclement weather. Admission to the concert, featuring a variety of Christmas favorites, is $5 a person or an unwrapped toy. All proceeds will be given to Toys for Tots.

CBS broadcasts The Early Show live from CentralHarry Smith and CBS The Early Show at Central College Dec. 3
CBS The Early Show broadcasted live from Grand Central Station in Maytag Student Center Dec. 3. Harry Smith ’73 is anchor of CBS The Early Show and interviewed a panel of undecided voters including seniors Josh Smith and Kristin Clague. Thank you to everyone who helped with production and behind the scenes before, during and after the show.

Title: Reference and instruction librarian
About me: Bachelor's degrees from Antioch College, Mass., and The Ohio State University; an MLIS from Kent State University; when not in the library, you can often find her out on the trails around Lake Red Rock with her two wild dogs, Tapio and Sasha; a recent professional highlight was being accepted to the Association of College and Research Libraries' Information Literacy Immersion 2007 program, during which she worked with librarians from across the United States and Canada on strategic planning and program development for our library.

Kleven presents response to a paper at annual meeting
Terry Kleven (religion) presented a critical response to a paper presented by Luis Lopez Farjeat (Universidad Panamerican Mexico City) at the 81st annual American Catholic Philosophical Association Meeting at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 9-11. Farjeat’s paper was titled “Determinism and Free Will in Alexander of Aphrodisias and the Arabic Tradition.” The topic of the annual meeting was “Freedom, Will and Nature,” and the paper and response were for a panel titled “Conceptions of Freedom, Will and God in the Arabic/Islamic Tradition.” 

Goodman reviews textbook
Russ Goodman (mathematics) reviewed three chapters from the newest edition of a textbook from Key College Publishing. The book is titled The Heart of Mathematics and is a well-known liberal arts mathematics textbook.

Breckenridge featured in magazine
Carol lei Breckenridge (music) was featured in the latest issue of Early Music America.   

Laine facilitates panel at convention
Linda Laine (communication studies) attended the National Communication Association convention in Chicago, Ill., Nov. 13-16, where she facilitated a panel titled, “Promoting Peace through Pedagogy: Learning and Looking Ahead by Reflecting on Student Classroom Experiences.”

Shriver presents poster at meeting
James Shriver (chemistry) presented a research poster titled “Urea-Containing Anion Receptors based on 2,4-Diamino Triazines” at the Regional American Chemical Society meeting Nov. 8 in Kansas City, Mo. Research was done in collaboration with Central students Nathan Bill ’07, Shaun Quam ’08 and Lindsay Kelderhouse ’08, who were co-authors.

McMartin honored for coaching
Head football coach Jeff McMartin (athletics) was named an American Football Coaches Association Division III regional coach of the year. He is among five regional honorees from the NCAA Division III and is under consideration for national coach of the year recognition. The regional winners will be honored at the AFCA convention in Anaheim, Calif., Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Wares in hall of fame
Head softball coach George Wares (athletics) was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches College Softball Hall of Fame Nov. 30 at the NFCA convention in Las Vegas, Nev.

Students Doing Interesting Things

Students create video for Van Buren County Hospital
Two Central College students, sophomore Jim Edgeton of Fairfield and freshman Adena Schnedler of Keosauqua, assisted Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua with a contest entry to win an in-house MRI from Siemens Medical Solutions. The hospital entered a two-minute video describing how owning and operating a MRI will benefit the health and wellbeing of the patients the hospital serves. Edgeton and Schnedler recorded the song for Van Buren County Hospital’s video entry.

The general public will vote for the winning entry by visiting http://www.winanmri.com. Voting is open through Monday, Dec. 31, and all votes will be tallied Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008. Van Buren County Hospital is the only hospital in central and eastern Iowa to submit an entry.

Phonathon students raise $100,000
Student ambassadors working on the Phonathon for the Central Fund pulled in the first $100,000 of their $200,000 goal before Thanksgiving break. This group of 20 students is doing an exceptional job. Their ability to raise these kinds of funds to go toward scholarship possibilities for future and current students is not easy. This year’s team includes: freshmen Breena Aldridge, Laura Alexander, Carissa Bane, Catelin Bixby, Danielle De Haan, Kendra Harding, Kristen Ingle and Briana Moss; sophomore: Amanda Van Dyk; juniors Ema Berger, Lucas Krumm, Dannielle Lindsey, Becca Skalsky and Amber Vonnahme; seniors Jacinda Davis, Elizabeth Miller, Lori Redenius, Lindee Russell, Seth Sojka and Sara Wenthold. Cindy Wilson (advancement) coordinates the Phonathon.

Chamber Singers perform mini-tour
The Central College Chamber Singers under the direction of Mark Babcock (music) recently performed a mini-day-tour singing in Central Iowa. Highlights included singing for an all-school assembly at PCM High School and the Wednesday Noon Recital Series at St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Des Moines. Many alumni, perspective students and friends of Central College attended the varied tour performances. Terri Crumley (admission/music) traveled with the Chamber Singers bringing greetings from Central College and also performing.

Four SWE students in honor band
Four students participated in the Iowa Collegiate Honor Band at Iowa State University in Ames in November. They rehearsed and performed with other select college instrumentalists from across the state. The concert, in which 16 colleges were represented Nov. 16, took place in Fisher Auditorium under the baton of guest conductor Andrew Boysen, composer/conductor from the University of New Hampshire. Symphonic Wind Ensemble students who participated were: sophomore Michelle Dickinson on alto saxophone; senior Eric Miller on euphonium;sophomore Emily Ruschill on trombone; and senior Syndey Slater on baritone saxophone.

Students on SSS service trip
Twenty-five students went to Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 30-Dec. 1 for the Student Support Services’ service trip. Students attended a dinner theater production of “Out of Order” by Ray Cooney at the New Theatre Restaurant. They worked at the Hope Faith Ministries homeless shelter serving breakfast and completing other service projects. Matt Diehl (SSS) and Ryan Roy (Educational Talent Search) accompanied the students.

Online enrollment for flex spending
Online enrollment process for flexible spending will be through Monday, Dec. 10. Instructions were e-mailed to all employees.

W-4
Certain circumstances require filing new W-4 forms. If the number of allowances an employee can claim decreases, a new W-4 must be filed within 10 days of the event. Such cases would be: divorces, death of a spouse and less dependents. A name change also requires a new W-4.

An employee may, but is not required to, file a new W-4 if the number of allowances that he or she can claim increases.
