I-Cubs in July
Central College alumni, parents, employees, friends and guests are invited for an evening at Principal Park in Des Moines, Thursday, July 10, to watch the I-Cubs take on Round Rock Express, affiliated with the Houston Astros. A picnic with all-you-can-eat hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, potato salad and soda begins at the Butter Kernel Corner picnic area at 5:45 p.m. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. Cost for the meal, reserved ticket to the game and I-Cubs hat (one size) is $21 for adults, $11 for children ages 4-10 and free for children ages three and under. Hoops Open golf tournament
The men’s basketball Hoops Open golf tournament is Thursday, July 17, at Bos Landen Golf Resort in Pella. The 18-hole, four-person scramble has a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Ottumwa event
Central College alumni, parents and friends are invited to Lunch in the Park at Ottumwa’s Central Park Friday, July 18, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Food provided by Hy-Vee and entertainment by The Capricorns from Potpourri Fine Arts Academy. Iowa Smokefree Air Act signs
The Iowa Smokefree Air Act goes into effect Tuesday, July 1. The link to the Department of Public Health’s Web site, http://www.iowasmokefreeair.gov/, provides a free mandatory “no smoking” sign. Public Health officials state “no smoking” signs must be posted at every entrance to a public place and place of employment where smoking is not allowed. The Web site also contains helpful “Frequently Asked Questions and Answers” and other information.
Pella Professional and Business Women’s Forum meeting July 10
Barb Braafhart, chief development officer at the Pella Regional Health Center, will be the guest speaker at the Pella Professional and Business Women’s Forum (PPBWF) Thursday, July 10, noon-1 p.m. at Central College in Graham Conference Center, room 2. Her topic is “From Good to Great: Raising the Bar at PRHC.”
PPBWF is a networking and professional development organization. Membership is open to career-oriented women in the community interested in enhancing different aspects of our work world. Central College collects items
Central faculty and staff collected over 1853 items for tornado vicitms in Parkersburger. The items will be delivered Wednesday, July 2, to Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg, where they will be delivered to tornado victims.
Geisler Library and media center summer hours
Summer hours for Geisler Library and the media center are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed evenings, weekends and holidays.
Summer hours for KAC
Summer hours for Kuyper Athletic Complex are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. It will be closed Saturday-Sunday. Summer hours go through Friday, Aug. 22.

Title: Multimedia technology specialist
About me: 1995 Central College graduate; has worked at Central since 1996; involved in Central College-Community Chorus; choir and hand bells at Second Reformed Church; board member of Friends of Central Arts (FOCA); frequently involved in summer Union Street Players' productions, including this summer’s production of The Pirates of Penzance as the Sergeant of Police; enjoys attending lots of music and cultural events on campus and around central Iowa.
Five to workshop for division chairs
Mark Johnson (computer science), Terry Kleven (religion), Viktor Martisovits (physics), Mary Jo Sodd (theatre) and Wendy Weber (mathematics) attended the 2008 Council of Independent Colleges Workshop for Department and Division Chairs, May 28-30, in Chicago, Ill.
The workshop for Department/Division Chairs focused on the theme “Advancing the Department.” The workshop provided chairpersons with a variety of instruments, strategies and approaches for addressing key areas of responsibility. Workshop topics included: using conflict for improvement, using data for program review, conducting difficult conversations, best practices of experienced chairs, preventive law, current legal issues for departments, and working with the chief academic officer.
Krogstad published
Ally Krogstad (Spanish) had an article published in the International Journal of Learning (Volume 15, Number 1, 2008). The article, also presented at the International Conference on Learning at the University of Chicago in June, is titled “Community as Classroom: Service Learning in the Foreign Language Classroom.”
Dolezal’s essay published
Josh Dolezal’s (English) essay “Literary Activism, Social Justice, and the Future of Bioregionalism” recently appeared in Ethics and the Environment, an interdisciplinary journal published by Indiana University Press.
Freed presents paper at conference
Jann Freed (economics/accounting/management) presented a paper at OBTC: Teaching Conference for Management Educators, June 11-14, at Babson College in Babson Park, Mass. Her paper was titled “Diversity Management: How to Teach in Order to Learn.”
Breckenridge on faculty of harpsichord workshop
Carol lei Breckenridge (music) was on the faculty of the Zuckermann Harpsichord workshop in Stonington, Conn., June 13-16.
Kleven at conference
Terry Kleven (religion) attended the conference “Philosophy in the Abrahamic Traditions” as part of the Aquinas and the Arabs Project and the Midwest Seminar in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., June 19-20.
Duinink moderator of mini-course
Leslie Duinink (exercise science) served as a moderator for a mini-course titled “Tips for Successful Management of Diabetes Mellitus during Exercise” during the 2008 National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s annual meeting in St. Louis, Mo., June 17-21.

Pella Shakespeare Company helps flood relief efforts
As a gesture of community support for Iowa City, the Pella Shakespeare Company headed by Ann Wilkinson (theatre), including Central College students senior Christy Barr; junior Megan Anderson; and sophomores Andy McGuire, Alissa Olson and Matt Van Ryswyk ’10 performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a fundraiser for the United Way of Johnson County, June 25.
