Event in Iowa City
Celebrate the first day of the 2008 Iowa Arts Festival with Central College at a social event in Iowa City, Friday, June 6. Hors d’oeuvres with a cash bar will be available at the Sheraton Hotel, 210 S. Dubuque St., from 6:30-8 p.m. The Iowa Arts Festival features live entertainment all evening in the Pedestrian Mall located right outside the Sheraton. Performers include the Mike and Amy Finders Band at 6 p.m., Tim O’Brien at 7 p.m., and the Sam Bush Band at 9 p.m. Bands are sponsored by the Iowa City Summer of the Arts and are family friendly. Men’s basketball annual golf tournament
Mark your calendar for the fifth annual Hoops Open golf tournament at Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Resort, Thursday, June 12. The 18-hole, four-person scramble shotgun start is at 1 p.m. Contests are held throughout the day including longest drive, longest putt and others. A buffet dinner, raffle and silent auction will follow the golf outing in the conference center at approximately 6 p.m. If you are unable to play golf, join us for dinner. Meet me in St. Louie
Join Central College alumni and friends at a social reception at Dressel’s Historic Welsh Pub, 419 N. Euclid Ave., in St. Louis, Mo., Wednesday, June 18, from 3-7 p.m. John Roslien (exercise science) will host the event along with Central’s athletic training staff. The reception is being held in conjunction with the National Athletic Trainers Association annual symposium in St. Louis. All Central alumni are welcome to attend. RSVP to the alumni office by Thursday, June 12.

New Jersey events
Alumni, parents, family and friends are welcome to gather at Edison Bowling Lanes in Edison, N.J., Sunday, June 22. You do not have to bowl to attend. RSVP to the alumni office by Monday, June 16. Call Lynne Petty (advancement) at ext. 5154 or e-mail alumni@central.edu.

New student orientation June 23-26
New student orientation will be Monday-Thursday, June 23-26, and Monday, July 28. The June dates are primarily for incoming first-year students, while the July date will be geared toward transfer students. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. in Maytag Student Center with a full day of sessions, academic advising and registration, and late-afternoon information fair. Families will likely depart by 5:30 p.m. on those days. Students will not be staying overnight on campus for orientation this year. Ottumwa event
Watch for “Lunch in the Park” in Ottumwa in June. More information to come.

I-Cubs in July 
Central College alumni, parents, employees, friends and guests are invited for an evening at Principal Park in Des Moines, Thursday, July 10, to watch the I-Cubs take on Round Rock Express, affiliated with the Houston Astros. A picnic with all-you-can-eat hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, potato salad and soda begins at the Butter Kernel Corner picnic area at 5:45 p.m. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. Cost for the meal, reserved ticket to the game and I-Cubs hat (one size) is $21 for adults, $11 for children ages 4-10 and free for children ages three and under. RAGBRAI
Riding on RAGBRAI this summer, Saturday-Saturday, July 19-26? Host cities are Missouri Valley, Harlan, Jefferson, Ames, Tama-Toledo, North Liberty, Tipton and LeClaire. If you’re participating or willing to host Central College alumni as they travel through, contact the alumni office.

Geisler Library and media center summer hours
Summer hours for Geisler Library and the media center are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed evenings, weekends and holidays.

Summer hours for KAC
Summer hours for Kuyper Athletic Complex are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. It will be closed Saturday-Sunday. The building will be closed Monday-Tuesday, May 12-27, for cleaning. Summer hours begin Tuesday, May 27, and go through Friday, Aug. 22. 

Commencement 2008
Two-hundred ninety-seven seniors participated in the commencement ceremony May 11. Harold Kolenbrander ’60 addressed the graduates. Don (professor emeritus of biology) and Maxine Huffman (professor emerita of English) received honorary doctorates.

Department: Theatre
Title: Professor of theatre; chair of the theatre department since 2001
About me: Bachelor's degree from the College of St. Catherine; master's from the University of Minnesota; doctorate from the University of Colorado - Boulder; conservatory training from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival; internship with the Royal National Theatre in London, England; serves on the steering committee for Cordova project and various projects; originally from Minneapolis, Minn., and has one daughter, who is her hero; still passionate about seeing theatre.

Hoekstra and Bruxvoort at technology conference
Tim Hoekstra (media center) and Deb Bruxvoort (IT Services) attended the Iowa Association for Communication Technology (IACT) and Iowa Distance Learning Association (IDLA) spring conference in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, April 17-18. Hoekstra is on the IACT board, and Deb is a former IACT board member.

Van Hecke
JoNes Van Hecke (student life) recently was named Iowa Student Personnel Association (ISPA) president-elect for the 2008-09 academic year. She’ll serve as ISPA president for the 2009-10 term.

Dolezal’s poem published
Josh Dolezal’s (English) poem “June Dream” appeared in the most recent issue of Third Coast, a semiannual literary journal.

Kleven presents essay at conference
Terry Kleven (religion) presented the following essay, “For Truth Does Not Oppose Truth.” The Agreement of Divine Law and Philosophy in Averroës’s The Book of the Decisive Treatise (Kitāb Fal al-Maqāl) for a conference on the Evolution of Islamic Politics, Philosophy and Culture in the Middle East and Africa: From Traditional Limits to Modern Extremes sponsored by the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa. The conference was in Washington, D.C., April 24-26.

SOS leaders
Congratulations to the student leaders selected as SOS Orientation Leaders for 2008-09. SOS leaders were chosen through a competitive interview process. They will work with small groups of incoming and transfer students throughout the summer and early fall to ease the transition to Central. They are: seniors Josh Cobie, Melissa Dentlinger, Lindsey Epkes, Tammy Peter, Marie Bruns, Lindsey Croghan, Jessica Palmer; juniors Hannah Anderson, LaDonna Haning, Johnny Jensen, Marshall McElhinney, Emily McPherson, Melissa Mount, Kristen Nerad, Lauren Oscarson, Krystal Rozeboom, Brandi L. CAB announced for 2008-09
Congratulations to the Campus Activities Board (CAB) Executive Chairpersons for 2008-09. The following students were selected through a competitive interview process to serve for next school year: seniors Tessa Andersen, Marianne Coonan, Melissa Dentlinger, Lindsey Epkes, Sarah Frese, Eric Hunerdosse, John Roloff; juniors David Baker, Dena Christian, Katie Papke, Kristin Brodie, Kayla Welter; sophomores Katie Ricketts, Billy Boyle, Stephanie Gibbons, Dirk Miller, Sadie Siefken and Sydney Williams. These students will lead campus-wide events in the areas of music, comedy, movies, lecture, off-campus programs, Central traditions and spirit, dance and recreation.

Students write grants
Students in Walter Cannon’s (English) spring “Writing for Not-for-profit Organizations”class wrote grant proposals for community agencies throughout Central Iowa. Earlier this month, students presented their work. Specific information follows about grant proposals that were approved.

  • Jaclyn Krebs ’09 wrote a Project Main Street grant proposal to KCCI of Des Moines. Her efforts enabled Centre for Arts and Artists to (CAA) receive $3,000 for pottery wheels and accessories to build a pottery room.
  • Hannah Anderson ’09 wrote a grant proposal to the Iowa Arts Council requesting funds for the Pella Community Art Center. This $1,500 award will be utilized for a Eulenspiegel puppet presentation that discusses the history of Iowa’s landscape.
  • Melissa Louderback ’09 wrote a grant proposal to Vermeer Corporation. As a result, Families First of Pella received $3,000 to use for parent education programs.
  • Amanda Whittle ’10 was part of a Christian Opportunity Center team that developed two grant proposals. A $2,500 grant proposal to Warren County Philanthropic Partnership was approved, and the money will be spent on an automated external defibrillator and new tables and chairs. An additional $4,000 grant was awarded for patio revitalization from Marion County United Way.

Summer hours correction
Summer office hours are in effect through Friday, Aug. 15. Office hours for the summer will be 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. In the judgment of the supervisor, hourly personnel may elect either a one-half or one-hour lunch period. Office casual attire presenting a favorable and professional image will be permitted for all administrative, support and student staff.  Unacceptable summer attire includes T-shirts, halter tops, jeans, skorts or shorts of any kind, athletic shoes or beach sandals. Acceptable clothing includes Central logo shirts, Capri pants and dress sandals.
