Pella Professional and Business Women’s Forum May 8
Mary Vermeer Andringa, president and co-chief executive officer of Vermeer Corporation, will discuss “Leading Change” in an interview setting with Betsy Roe, Central College ambassador and consultant, at the Pella Professional and Business Women’s Forum (PPBWF). The luncheon and conversation is Thursday, May 8, at noon in Graham Conference Center, Room 2.

PPBWF is a networking and professional development organization. Membership is open to career-oriented women in the community interested in enhancing different aspects of our work world. Weight Watchers at Work starts again
During our “Bring a Co-Worker” campaign, both current and joining members receive six months of FREE Weight Watchers magazines.

Still available is 19 weeks of FREE eTools (weight-loss Internet companion) with every fully-paid membership for a 17-week series. Payments from 20 members are required the day of the open house for the 17-week series and to ensure the leader returns the following week. Without those payments, there is no guarantee we can continue — the demand is always high for leaders to open new meetings. If you have 15-19 members, pay at the open house meeting. Most clients prefer to revert to a 15-week series for $180 (or 3 payments of $60).

Event in Iowa City
Celebrate the first day of the 2008 Iowa Arts Festival at a social event in Iowa City, Friday, June 6. Hors d’oeuvres with a cash bar will be available at the Sheraton Hotel, 210 S. Dubuque St., from 6:30-8 p.m. The Iowa Arts Festival features live entertainment all evening in the Pedestrian Mall located right outside the Sheraton. Performers include the Mike and Amy Finders Band at 6 p.m., Tim O’Brien at 7 p.m., and the Sam Bush Band at 9 p.m. Bands are sponsored by the Iowa City Summer of the Arts and are family friendly. Men’s basketball annual golf tournament
Mark your calendar for the fifth annual Hoops Open golf tournament at Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Resort, Thursday, June 12. The 18-hole, four-person scramble shotgun start is at 1 p.m. Contests are held throughout the day including longest drive, longest putt and others. A buffet dinner, raffle and silent auction will follow the golf outing in the conference center at approximately 6 p.m. If you are unable to play golf, join us for dinner. Meet me in St. Louie
Join Central College alumni and friends at a social reception at Dressel’s Historic Welsh Pub, 419 N. Euclid Ave., in St. Louis, Mo., Wednesday, June 18, from 3-7 p.m. John Roslien (exercise science) will host the event along with Central’s athletic training staff. The reception is being held in conjunction with the National Athletic Trainers Association annual symposium in St. Louis. All Central alumni are welcome to attend. I-Cubs in July 
Central College alumni, parents, employees, friends and guests are invited for an evening at Principal Park in Des Moines, Thursday, July 10, to watch the I-Cubs take on Round Rock Express, affiliated with the Houston Astros. A picnic with all-you-can-eat hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, potato salad and soda begins at the Butter Kernel Corner picnic area at 5:45 p.m. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. Cost for the meal, reserved ticket to the game and I-Cubs hat (one size) is $21 for adults, $11 for children ages 4-10 and free for children ages three and under. Campus News

Education and psychology building groundbreakingEducation and psychology building virtual groundbreaking
Central College held a virtual groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its future education and psychology building April 18 in Cox-Snow Recital Hall.

The 57,748 gross square foot structure, costing more than $18 million and scheduled for completion in the fall 2009, will feature energy conservation and environmental responsibility. The three-story building will provide new classroom, office and instructional space for the education and psychology departments, along with the community-based learning department.

1203 Independence now called Howard McKee Hall
Howard McKee and Megan SwingenThe Central College Board of Trustees recognized an emeritus trustee by naming Central College’s 1203 Independence Residence Hall “Howard McKee Hall.”

Howard McKee, a 1938 Central graduate, received an honorary degree from the college in 1981. He currently serves as national co-chair of the Campaign for Central and served on the board of trustees from 1978-86. He’s established numerous scholarships through the McKee Family Foundation including 60 scholarships to students during the 2007-08 school year.

Geisler Library and media center summer hours
Geisler Library and media center will be closed Saturday-Sunday, May 10-11. Summer hours begin Monday, May 12. Open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed evenings, weekends and holidays.

Summer hours for KAC
Summer hours for Kuyper Athletic Complex are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. It will be closed Saturday-Sunday. The building will be closed Monday-Tuesday, May 12-27 for cleaning. Summer hours begin Tuesday, May 27, and go through Friday, Aug. 22.

Central co-sponsors Going Green
Central College together with the University of Iowa Facilities Management co-sponsored the Going Green summit which was organized by Iowa Campus Compact to coincide with Earth Day April 22. This event was held at the State Capitol Building in Des Moines. Colleges, universities, community partners and business leaders from across the state gathered at the inaugural summit titled “Going Green: The Role of Iowa Colleges and Universities in a Sustainable Future,” which encouraged these organizations to make socially responsible decisions in relation to the environment and energy usage. Russell Benedict (biology) was a guest speaker for the event.

About me: Hails from Redfield, Iowa; graduate of Central College; has worked in academic affairs, admission, athletics, residential life, student activities and student life at Central; can recall just about any football game or play from the past 20 years; enjoys doing pump and runs, biking, lifting and driving his wife crazy.

Faculty awards
The annual faculty recognition reception was April 28. Thomas Kopecek (religion) was honored upon his retirement. Three faculty members were inducted into the Heritage Club for 25 years of service to Central: Cathy Haustein (chemistry), Treva Reimer (cultural affairs) and Jim Zaffiro (political science). Appreciation was expressed to visiting Chinese scholar Songbo Zhou for her contributions to the college this year.

Briggs secretary, nominated for chair
Dustin Briggs (athletics/exercise science) was named secretary for the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society. He’s also been nominated to serve as chair of the public relations committee for the Mid-American Athletic Trainers Association District V. If selected, he will begin in June.

Dolezal’s essay in journal
Josh Dolezal’s (English) essay “The North Fork” appeared in the most recent issue of Ascent, a tri-annual literary journal.

Friedman at conference
Jane Friedman (library) attended the 2008 Midwest Interlibrary Loan Conference at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, April 10-11.

Diehl and Boertje at spring conference
Matt Diehl and Cyndi Boertje (both SSS) attended the 2008 Iowa Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel spring conference held April 16-18 at Lake Okoboji. The theme was “Sail Into Education with TRIO.”

Breckenridge performs recital
On April 28, Carol lei Breckenridge (music) played a recital at Grinnell College with Eric McIntyre, natural horn. Breckenridge played a copy of an early 19th-century piano, and the program consisted of horn-piano works by Danzi, Beethoven and McIntyre. Breckenridge also played “Variations, Op. 34,” by Beethoven.

Korcheck presents paper
Kathy Korcheck (Spanish) presented a paper at the 61st annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, April 17-19, at the University of Kentucky. The paper was titled, “‘La argentina pareces vos. Yo, en cambio, me estoy mallorquinizando.’ Postmemory’s Transnational Reach in Carme Riera’s La mitad del alma.”

Robertson and Kroese at workshop
Mary Robertson and Nancy Kroese (both SSS) attended a workshop April 17 at North Iowa Area Community Colleges for disability providers in postsecondary education. Jane Jarrow, executive director of the association on Higher Education and Disability, presented information on the legal, philosophical and practical issues surrounding accommodations. The discussion focused on what circumstances should be evident before an accommodation is assigned.    

Fontana, Lubberden and Zaffiro co-present at conference
Janine Fontana, Mike Lubberden (facilities planning and management) and Jim Zaffiro (political science/environmental studies) co-presented “Community-Building and Sustainability At Central College” April 19 at the Upper Midwest Association of Colleges for Sustainability Conference at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Butt at annual convention, completes assessments
Anya Butt (natural science) attended the annual convention of the American Association of Geographers in Boston, Mass., as well as the Iowa Academy of Sciences meeting in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, followed by the bi-annual field trip/meeting of the Geological Society of Iowa.

Along with her Surface and Groundwater Resources class, Eric Harris ’08 and Butt completed biological, habitat and chemical assessments of monitoring sites established by the IOWATER grant Harris obtained earlier in Thunder Creek, north of Pella.

Kilibarda and Bruxvoort present poster session
Kris Kilibarda (education) and Deb Bruxvoort (IT services) presented a poster session titled “Student Teaching Observations Using Untethered Technology” at the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education summit in San Francisco, Calif., April 3-5.

Annual math meeting
The annual meeting of the Iowa Section of the Mathematical Association of America was held April 25-26 at Simpson College. Al Hibbard attended, Wendy Weber served as the secretary of the meeting, and Russ Goodman (all mathematics) gave a presentation titled “Leading a Book Discussion in a Liberal Arts Mathematics Class.”

Psychology faculty take students to convention
Peggy Fitch, Keith Jones, Soo Uhm and Ed Willis (all psychology) traveled with 17 psychology majors to Chicago, Ill., April 30-May 2, for the Midwestern Psychological Association Convention.

Green helps KNIA/KRLS win award
KNIA/KRLS received first place in the Political Coverage category at 2008 Iowa Broadcast News Association award ceremony Saturday for its coverage of the 2008 Iowa Caucuses in Marion County. KNIA/KRLS coverage included analysis from radio staff Glenn King and Bob Leonard, and live caucus updates from Dean Johnson, Derek Cardwell and Spencer Dirks at caucus sites, as well as analysis from Andrew Green (political science).

“Professor Green’s contribution was instrumental to our coverage and critical to our obtaining this prestigious award,” said Leonard. “We appreciate his efforts very much, as well as the efforts of other Central College faculty, students and staff who contribute regularly to our news programming.”

Lang and Swanson earn basketball honors
Congratulations to Simeon Lang ’08 and Mary Swanson ’08, winners of this year’s Gary Dirksen Achievement Awards in men’s and women’s basketball.

Student reps for board
Congratulations to the student representatives to the board of trustees: juniors Tyler Schipper, Matt Sigmund, Brandon Williams, Danielle Jacobson and Erinn Lauterbach. They will serve during the 2008-09 academic school year.

Overturf receives scholarship
Alysha Overturf ’09 of Bettendorf was selected to receive an undergraduate scholarship presented by the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society. She is the second Central student in a row to receive this recognition.

Kelderhouse receives fellowship
Senior Lindsay Kelderhouse, a chemistry and biology major from Island Lake, Ill., was recently awarded the Purdue University Claire Boothe Luce Fellowship. It’s the first time the prize has been given to a Central graduate.

This fall, Kelderhouse will begin a five-year program at Purdue pursuing a doctoral degree in chemistry. The fellowship will assist her when researching drug design and discovery.

The Claire Boothe Luce Fellowship, which replaces Kelderhouse’s teaching assistantship at Purdue, includes a yearly stipend and funds to cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, professional development, research and support programs for a two-year period. The award, established in 1989, is given to women in science, mathematics and engineering. Twelve total fellowships were given this year to students from around the country, and overall, the program has supported more than 1,500 women.

Summer attire, hours
Office casual attire presenting a favorable and professional image will be permitted starting Monday, May 12, ending Friday, Aug. 8, for all administrative, support and student staff.  Unacceptable summer attire includes T-shirts, halter tops, jeans, skorts or shorts of any kind, athletic shoes or beach sandals. Acceptable clothing includes Central logo shirts, Capri pants and dress sandals. Office hours for the summer will be 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. starting Monday, May 12, through Friday, Aug. 8. In the judgment of the supervisor, hourly personnel may elect either a one-half or one-hour lunch period.

Safety tip
Central College is a member of the National Safety Council. With that membership, Central receives the benefit of having a resource on a wide variety of safety issues. All employees are encouraged to use this resource any time they want to research a safety topic. The topics not only include work safety, but also several at home and off the job safety issues. This does not include existing employees who are members.  However, if we meet the 5 percent, existing members will be eligible for the corporate savings.  Employees can use the Pella or Knoxville location and the soon-to-open Oskaloosa location.
