Central Club raffle
The Central Club is raffling off a chance for a walleye fishing trip for six from Ballards Resort at Lake of the Woods in Minnesota. The trip includes four nights lodging, 3 days of guided walleye fishing and 11 meals. Winners can schedule their trip any time between May 15-Oct. 15 (mid-week rules apply). The raffle will be held May 1. Cost is $10 per ticket and all proceeds go to the Central Club. To purchase a ticket, contact Dave Pavlat (exercise science) at ext. 7636.
Focus the Nation
Calvin DeWitt, professor of environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin, is the keynote speaker for Focus the Nation Thursday, Jan. 31. His address titled “The Scientist and the Shepherd” will be in Douwstra Auditorium at 11 a.m. DeWitt’s appearance is part of the Mark and Kay De Cook Distinguished Speaker Series.
DeWitt also will give a sermon “Care of Creation” that evening in Douwstra Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. A community choir, open to Central students and the public, along with a joint bell choir (Central College and Pella community members) will perform at the service. Practice for each choir is 6:30-7:15 p.m. Mark Babcock (music) will direct the community choir, while Tina De Young of Second Reformed Church will lead the bell choir. The worship service is in conjunction of the Week of Christian Unity and sponsored by the Pella Ministerial Association. The events are free and open to the public.
Focus the Nation directly engages millions of students and citizens in dialogue about global warming. The day includes events in which faculty members and students will present sessions on global warming. Over 1,000 campuses will help focus the nation on solutions to global warming Thursday, Jan. 31, making Focus the Nation the largest teach-in in U.S. history.

VanHecke leads workshop
JoNes VanHecke (student life) lead a professional development workshop for faculty and student affairs professionals at Gustavus Adolphus College Dec. 20, 2007. The workshop focused on liberal arts learning outcomes and assessment practices.
Chia Ning appointed by Supreme Court of Iowa
Dec. 7, 2007, The Supreme Court of Iowa appointed Chia Ning (history) to the Attorney Disciplinary Board as one of the two lay members or one of the eight members in the current board. Chia Ning is expected to bring the lay perspective, intellectual thought, voice of minority groups, and women’s point of view to the Iowa law practice.
Peterson presents at annual meeting
Brian Peterson (economics/accounting/business management) presented “The Wal-Mart Effect: Teaching Principles of Microeconomics with Wal-Mart and the Popular Media” and discussed “Using Cooperative Learning to Enhance Student Writing” at the American Economic Association annual meeting in New Orleans, La., Jan. 4-6.
Haustein and Frye accepted for publication
Cathy Haustein (chemistry), along with Abby Frye ’06 recently had a paper accepted for publication in the American Journal of Undergraduate Research. The paper is titled “Extraction, Identification and Quantification of Harmala Alkaloids in Three Species of Passiflora.”

Lunch and learn
A lunch and learn about “Everything You Wanted To Know About Financial Aid But Did Not Want To Ask Directly” will be Thursday, Feb. 21, from 11 a.m.-noon in Vermeer Science Center Room 180. Jean Vander Wert (financial aid) and Carol Williamson (admission) will answer questions on Central’s financial aid. All employees, faculty and staff, are encouraged to attend. Bring your own lunch.

Visiting Instructor of Spanish
A one-year, full-time sabbatical replacement beginning August 2008. Minimum qualifications include an MA (Spanish generalist) with ability to teach first-year Spanish, evidence of excellent teaching, and experience with proficiency-based language instruction.
Technical Services Librarian position
A 12-month, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor. Qualifications include ALA accredited MLS/MIS, 1-3 years of relevant experience in an academic or research library, a demonstrated ability to apply emerging digital solutions to meet user needs, and relevant experience with integrated library systems management. Further qualifications are listed on Central’s Web site.
