Central Service Day in Washington, D.C.
Central Service Day will be held in Washington, D.C., Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Service includes helping Casey Trees restore D.C.’s legacy as the “City of Trees” and participating in a large community planting. For more information, go to www.central.edu/alumni/events.

Iowa Strength and Conditioning Clinic May 6
Central will host the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Iowa Strength and Conditioning Clinic Sunday, May 6, with on-site registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Vermeer Science Center. To register, e-mail Dave Pavlat (exercise science) at pavlatd@central.edu. Registration fees are as follows: $45 through Sunday, April 22, or $55 on-site for NSCA members; $35 through Sunday, April 22, or $45 on-site for students; and $50 through Sunday, April 22, or $60 on-site for non-members.

The clinic, ending at 3:50 p.m., features nearly 10 speakers to discuss such topics as “Program Design: The Three Tier System,” “Assessment and Evaluation for the Shoulder and Back,” “How to Train Explosively Without the Use of Olympic Lifts,” “Competitive Speed Drills,” “Bulgarian Strength Training in the Weight Room” and “Major Mistakes in the Main Lifts.” A one-hour lunch is included with registration fee at Central Market.

Senior banquet, baccalaureate, commencement
The senior banquet will be Friday, May 11, from 5-7 p.m. in the Graham Conference Center. Baccalaureate is Saturday, May 12, at First Reformed Church at 2 p.m. Joel Brummel (chaplain) will give the message. Sunday, May 13, Central will hold its annual graduation ceremony in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse for 311 graduates. Des Moines business leader Ted Townsend will address the students.

Alumni golf outing
Join President David Roe, members of the Central coaching staff, alumni, parents, friends and guests at a lunch and golf outing at Brairwood Golf Course in Ankeny, Monday, May 14. Employee Spotlight - Phil Webber

Name: Phil Webber
Department: Modern languages, linguistics
Title: Professor of German and chair of linguistics
About me: Married to Jan, retired from the Center for Academic Excellence; holds degrees from Earlham College, University of Chicago and Bryn Mawr College; also studied at Spertus College of Judaica, University of Pennsylvania and University of Tubigen; done research and lectured in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and the former Yugoslavia; academic instersts divided between the investigation of manuscripts and the study of ethnic groups, which combine in his book Zoar in the Civil War; enjoys singing and playing music, gardening and hunting mushrooms.

Van Kooten works on Bible
Val Van Kooten (English) completed work on a couple’s devotional Bible for Zondervan Publishing through Christianity Today. She was one of 10 writers across North America working on the project. The Bible is scheduled to release in April 2008.

Zehner at regional meeting
Edwin Zehner (anthropology) participated on April 12-13 in the North Central regional meeting of the American Academy of Religion, which was held at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. His paper, part of a panel on religion in North America, was titled “Mournful Praise, Self-less Aid and Serendipitous Networking: Traces of the Postmodern in Twenty-first Century White Evangelical Christianity.”

Olivier at conference, gives presentation
Lowell Olivier (conference services) attended the annual conference for the Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors International in Baltimore, Md., March 25-28.

He gave a presentation on dining etiquette to five groups in the Quad Cities during March and April. St. Ambrose College Upward Bound program, Wilton High School, Augustana College career center, Western Illinois University and St. Ambrose College Career Center all sponsored etiquette dinners for students, community leaders, faculty and administration. The program prepares students for future interviews and special events when they may be invited to a business or formal meal. During the presentation, students learn the basics of networking, table manners and hosting events.

Goodman published
Russ Goodman (mathematics) had an article titled “What I Learned From ...Giving Oral Examinations” published in the March 2007 issue of the newsletter of the Mathematical Association of America.

Hibbard presents at meeting
Al Hibbard (mathematics/computer science) presented at the Iowa section meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. His talk was titled “Overview of the version of mathematica currently in development.” He also was appointed information director for the section. The meeting was April 13-14 at Drake University in Des Moines.

Prothero elected to second term
Joy Prothero (education) was elected to a second term as chair of the executive committee for the Area Education Agencies Board of Directors. Prothero presided over the 32nd annual AEA Board of Directors Conference in West Des Moines April 19-20. She hosted the Iowa Department of Education and State Board of Education Update on Education. 

Kleven presents paper
Terry Kleven (religion) presented a paper titled “Al-Ghazali’s Misunderstanding of the Islamic Political Philosophy of al-Farabi in The Deliverance from Error (Al-Munqidh min al-Dalal).” The essay was presented at the 58th annual meeting of the American Research Center in Egypt in Toledo, Ohio, April 20-22. The paper was presented for a section on Medieval and Modern Egypt.

Zaffiro presents paper at sustainability conference
With financial support from the Budget Committee, Jim Zaffiro (political science) presented his paper “Red, White and Green at Central College: Community-Building and Sustainability” at the second annual Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference at the University of Maryland-College Park April 17-19.

Butt busy at conference, hosts meeting
Anya Butt (environmental science) attended the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in San Francisco, Calif., April 17-21. She presented a paper on “Where have all the geography courses gone? An analysis of programs at Iowa universities and colleges.”  Melinda Daniels (University of Connecticut) presented a paper titled ”Perceptions of Wood by river managers: challenges for stream restoration” which Butt co-authored along with Wendy Bigler (Southern Illinois University) Kathryn Boyer (USDA), Stan Gregory (Oregon State University), Martin Lafrenz (Portland State University), Michael Urban (University of Missouri), Ellen Wohl (Colorado State University), Harve Piegay (Universy Lyon III), Kenneth Gregory (University of Southampton and Yves Le Lay (University Lyon III).

Scott Sandberg accompanied Butt and presented work from his senior honors project “Developing a land management plan for Central College’s Carlson Kuyper Field Station,” as did senior Shaima Muhammed who presented in an interactive paper session on “Follow the women: cycling for peace.”

Butt co-lead a field trip of geological exposures near the Red Rock Dam Visitor’s Center in Jaspar County with Raymond Anderson from the Geological Society of Iowa April 28.

April 27-28, Central hosted the 119th meeting of the Iowa Academy of Sciences. Ellie DuPre (biology) served as the biology section chair. Jim Shriver (chemistry) was the chemistry section chair, while Butt was the geology section chair. 

Wilkinson does casting for film
Ann Wilkinson (theatre) did the Iowa casting for The Final Season last summer. The film made its world premier in early March at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. A total of 4,550 films were submitted with 157 chosen. The Final Season was one of 12 sports-related movies to be featured at the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival. The movie, filmed in Iowa last summer, tells the inspiring true story of the 1991 Norway High School baseball team and its quest to win a 20th state title in the last season before merging with a larger district. Among the movie’s top stars include Sean Astin, Powers Boothe, Rachael Leigh Cook and Iowa native Tom Arnold.

Zehner receives fellowship
Edwin Zehner (anthropology) was awarded a State Department-funded fellowship through the American Institute of Yemeni Studies to study Arabic for 10 weeks in Sana’a, Yemen. He plans to use the fellowship in the summer of 2008.

Friedman at conference
Jane Friedman (library) attended the Midwest Interlibrary Loan Conference April 13 at Loras College. Informative sessions included the use of ILLiad as an interlibrary loan tool, copyright issues and the use of Odyssey as a document delivery system. 

Three at math meeting
The Iowa Section of the Mathematical Association of America held its annual meeting at Drake University April 13-14. In attendance and presenting at the talk were Russ Goodman, Mark Mills and Wendy Weber (all mathematics).

Goodman gave a presentation titled “Using Oral Exams to Help Prepare Future Elementary Mathematics Teachers” and also participated in/coordinated the Iowa Project NExT activities.

Mills presented two talks: “An Algorithm for Creating ‘Equal’ Regions” and “What I Did on My Sabbatical: Experiencing the ‘Real World.’”

Weber served as secretary of the section and also presented “Mathematical Questions from the Classroom.” 

Hibbard named information director
Al Hibbard (mathematics) recently was selected to be the information director for the Iowa section of the Mathematical Association of America for 2007-09. As director, Hibbard will maintain the section’s Web page and member database, as well as put together the fall and spring section newsletters.


Council Report

Council reports moving to myCentral
Check the new Enrollment and Financial Support Council module on myCentral. The module includes mission and vision; admission, Central College Abroad and advancement reports on recruitment and fundraising goals; and minutes. This up-to-date information replaces EFSC’s monthly reports in CampusTown. To view the module, go to  http://my.central.edu and log in using your Central  College username and password, then select the InfoCentral tab. If you would like to place the module at the top of the screen to locate it easier in the future, click the “Modify Layout” button to rearrange the modules on the page.

Students Doing Interesting Things

CAB at conference
Eight representatives from the Campus Activities Board attended the Northern Plains Regional Conference of the National Association of Campus Activities in St. Paul, Minn., April 12-15. The students joined over 800 students from colleges and universities across the Midwest. While at the conference, students attended workshops on leadership development and began shaping the activities calendar for next school year. Attending the conference were: Lindsay Ahlgren, junior; Garra Williams, junior; Melissa Dentlinger, sophomore; Evan Olson, sophomore; Michael Fulton, freshman; Dena Christian, freshman; Katie Papke, freshman; and Jana Stallman, freshman. The group was accompanied by Bonnie Dahlke (student activities), who served on the regional planning committee for the conference.

SOS leaders at conference
SOS orientation leaders Maria Hickle, junior; Eric Hunerdosse, sophomore; Colleen Sheriff, sophomore; and Laura Bade, sophomore attended the regional conference for the National Orientation Directors Association in Waterloo, Iowa, April 13-14. They joined nearly 400 orientation leaders from schools across the Midwest sharing orientation program ideas and attending leadership skills workshops. The students from Central are involved directly with coordinating the Welcome Week program for incoming students and their families.

Choir tour Central chior
The Central College A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers and vocal jazz singers toured Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin April 11-15, stopping at select schools and churches along the way, including a performance at Holy Hill National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, in Hubertus, Wis.Holy Hill choir bus
Weir talks at conference
Nate Weir ’05 spoke at the Athletic Training Education Program Senior banquet April 22. He highlighted his experiences while at Central College and how they contribute to his success as an assistant athletic trainer in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers.

Flaherty does research
Dan Flaherty ’05 was selected to present his research in Alzheimer’s disease at the Asian Pacific Rim Developmental International Student Forum in Japan. He was one of 10 people out of 280 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who was accepted to attend. He also received the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education Fellowship, a national award.

Psychology students to present at convention
Peggy Fitch, Keith Jones, Jim Schulze and Ed Willis (all psychology) will accompany 11 psychology students and one psychology alumna to the 2007 Midwestern Psychological Association Convention in Chicago, Ill., May 3-5. Poster presentations by seniors include:
