Alumni event in Knoxville
Celebrate and socialize with Central College alumni, parents and friends in Knoxville Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006. Event in Naples, Fla.

Track and field meet

Humanities Iowa grant
Central College was awarded a $6,250 grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities for the Geisler Library Writers Reading spring 2006 series. The first program features U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser who will be on campus Monday, Jan. 23. Kooser will meet informally with aspiring writers in the Library’s Reading Room at 4 p.m. and will read from his Pulitzer Prize collection Delights & Shadows in Douwstra Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.. The program is free and open to the public. Copies of Kooser’s books will be available for purchase from the Central College bookstore.
Once again, Humanities Iowa deemed our project “exemplary.” In addition to Humanities Iowa funds, additional sponsors are Geisler Library, The Friends of Central Arts and Pella High School. Eastin supervises undergraduate research on hurricanes at
Iowa State University
Matthew Eastin (mathematics and environmental studies) supervised an honors research project for an undergraduate meteorology student at Iowa State University. The student’s research focused on relationships between hurricane eye size, eye shape and intensity with an emphasis toward intensity forecasting applications.
Breckenridge plays concert, gives lecutre
Carol lei Breckenridge (music) played a Mozart piano concerto with the University of North Dakota Chamber Orchestra Nov. 22. She also gave a lecture and masterclass while at the university.
Van Kooten’s article published
Valerie Van Kooten (English) has an article coming out in Country Magazine (Reiman Publications) in the February/March issue. It’s an essay on how the recipes in her files are really a catalog of memories of the family and friends who gave them to her. The issue will hit newsstands in early January.
Woodward update
Tilly Woodward (art) exhibited a series of oil paintings in “Land and Water,” in Olson Larson Gallery’s annual landscape show in Des Moines in June and July. The exhibit and Woodward’s work were reviewed by Amanda Pierre in the Des Moines Register and by City View.
She served as a juror for Quad City Arts’ Exhibition Program in June and co-directed an equestrian/art camp for children and teens in June and July.
Woodward exhibited a series of oil paintings in “X” the inaugural exhibit of Gallery 611 in Pella in August and September. The exhibit and Woodward’s work were reviewed by Amanda Pierre in the Des Moines Register.
In September and November, she was included in the exhibit “Made in Iowa,” curated by Mel Andringa to coincide with the Cedar Rapids Museum’s exhibition “Grant Wood at 5 Turner Alley.” “Made in Iowa” featured artists whose work explore similar themes to those explored by Grant Wood. The works exhibited were on loan to Legion Arts from Central College’s collection of art.
Woodward helped write the narrative, create a visual presentation and curated an exhibit of Pella artists for Pella’s Iowa Great Places bid with Betsy Roe, Carla Ferguson, Gary Timmer, Karen Eischen, Myron Lynn, Ken Weller and Mary Andringa.
She gave a presentation on the Mills Gallery and the college/community connection in the arts to the Central Auxiliary Oct. 24.
Works from Woodward’s “AIDS Portrait Project” were published in The Project: 2004 Annual Report by the AIDS Project of Central Iowa, which owns the portrait project and uses it for educational outreach.
She had a solo exhibition at Ashford University’s Cortona Gallery in October with a gallery talk Nov. 2.
Woodward’s “Portraits of Dubuque” was on exhibit at OSADA in Cedar Rapids. OSADA provides housing and support for refugees from around the world as they transition to life in Iowa. The works featured portraits of people nominated for neighborly acts during a period of racial violence in Dubuque in the early 1990s and were on loan from Legion Arts’ permanent collection.
She had a solo exhibition at the Maharishi University of Management’s Unity Gallery in Fairfield in November. Woodward gave a gallery talk Nov. 30.
Woodward celebrated 15 years of Art Center Programs at the Pella Community Center Nov. 12. She is the founding director of the Art Center, which has grown from an after school arts program serving 40 children in 1990, to a multifaceted compliment of arts activities and events serving more than 15,400 people of all ages in the first seven months of 2005.
She installed a selection of paintings that explore the community diversity and growth in the offices of the Pella Community Foundation in December.
She also had a studio exhibition Dec. 1-2.
Dolezal published
Josh Dolezal (English) had several works published including: “The Shallows and the Deeps” (essay) in The Gettysburg Review 18.3 (2005): 409-16; “Watershed” (essay). River Teeth 7.1 (2005): 13-18; “A Hot Bath in April” (nonfiction short). Brevity 19 (2005); “Someday Johnson Creek” (poem). Natural Bridge 13 (2005): 171; and “Molt” (poem). Nimrod International Journal 48.2 (2005): 16.
Six to NAFSA conference
Elizabeth Benedict , Miranda Gasow and Jessica Klyn (Central College Abroad), along with students Kristen Hickman ’07, Brad Hopkins ’06 and Sheri Hawker ’07 attended the NAFSA region IV conference Nov. 10-11 in Des Moines. Benedict and Klyn attended an all-day pre-conference workshop Nov. 9 titled “Study Abroad 101.”
Gasow and Benedict along with students Hickman, Hopkins and Hawker and representatives from Iowa State presented a session titled “Students Speak: How Returned Study Abroad Students Internationalize our Campuses,” which shared examples of ways to incorporate returning students into the internationalization process. Students shared their experiences promoting study abroad opportunities after returning to their campuses.
In addition to attending and presenting, they also displayed a Central College Abroad booth in the exhibit hall.

Congratulations to Dwight and Lynne (dining services) Steenhoek on the birth of grandson Ryan Edward Steenhoek, born to Bryce and Jennifer Steenhoek Nov. 23. Ryan weighed 6 lbs. 12 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Toys for Tots
The Honor House council, Pod council, Stauffer East, the yellow house and CAB donated a total of $550 in toys to Toys for Tots.
State-wide volunteer rewards program
The 10,000 Hours Show rewards volunteers with a free concert ticket to a nationally known artist just for volunteering 10 hours of service at a nonprofit organization. Central students April Feldman ’07, Jenny Petersen ’08, Megan McConville ’06, Bethany Gullion ’07, Serenity Peiffer ’07, Jeni Wailes ’07, Nicole Sojka ’08, Becca Mills ’07 and VISTA Renee Sedlacek ’05 have been busy promoting the program to community organizations and volunteers. Angel Tree events
Dec. 2, Central College alumni Allison Townsley ’05 and Jenny Wood ’05 along with a dozen University of Northern Iowa students hosted a Christmas party for the angel tree children in the area. Angel tree children are those children who have one or both parents in prison. Pastor Ed Baker and Orchard Hill Reformed Church near UNI hosted the event.
Thirty Central College students hosted a Christmas party at Meredith Drive Reformed Church in Des Moines for 50 angel tree children Dec. 3. The students were able to give little gift bags to all the children as well as enjoy a meal together.
Candlelight service
Dec. 11, Campus Ministries, InterVarsity and FCA joined together for the annual ecumenical Christmas candlelight worship held at Second Reformed Church in Pella. President David Roe hosted the dessert fellowship following the service.
Charity Ball
Central raised $1,581 at the Charity Ball to go to the Pella Katrina Relief to help the families who have moved from the New Orleans area to Pella.

Flex spending
Please submit any flex spending claims for 2005 to Marsh Tax Saver. The reimbursement forms are available on the internal Web site or in the human resources office. You have until Friday, March 31, 2006, to submit your 2005 incurred medical/dental/dependent care expenses to Marsh Tax Saver. Medical/dental/dependent care expenses incurred in 2006 should be submitted to FlexAmerica. We will put the reimbursement form on our Web site after Jan. 1, 2006.
Support staff
Your next check will come during the holiday break. It will be administered as follows:
- For those of you who are on direct deposit, your check will go into your account on Friday, Dec. 23. If you are on direct deposit, your advice will be held here until you return to work.
- For all others, your Friday, Dec. 23, paycheck will be dropped in the mail on Friday, Dec. 23. Your check will be sent to the home address we have on file for you. If you have recently moved, please let Kristen Parks or Jana Sietstra know AS AP.
Winter holiday schedule
The campus will be closed Thursday-Tuesday, Dec. 22-27. Offices will be open Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 28-30, and again be closed Saturday-Monday, Dec. 31-Jan. 2, 2006.
Inclement Weather Policy
Since the college is mostly a residential college, it is not possible to completely close the college in the case of inclement weather. Even if classes are not held, there are essential services that must be provided. Closing announcements will be made through mass voice mail, e-mail and local radio stations in Pella, Knoxville, Oskaloosa and Des Moines by the marketing and media relations office through direction of the president or a designated representative.
When the college is not officially closed, even though the weather may seem threatening, classes will be held at the discretion of the faculty member. Faculty members are urged to be sensitive to their own, as well as to, student safety in applying this policy. The policy is not intended to force people to take unwise risks, but rather to keep the academic program operating.
As is the case with faculty and students, members of the administrative and support staff will be permitted to exercise discretion with respect to the relative safety of travel to and from the work place. In this spirit, it is anticipated that staff members will make every effort consistent with their own safety to be at work. If the staff member is unable to get to work, notification to his/her immediate supervisor is required.
When the president of the college, or his/her designated representative, officially closes the college, staff members will be excused from work and will receive pay in the following circumstances:
- The staff member is at work when the closing is announced and is released and paid for their regularly scheduled hours.
- The staff member whose work schedule begins during a closing will not be required to work and will be paid for their normally scheduled hours.
Those staff members who work in areas that cannot close, such as dining services, security, critical maintenance and snow removal should follow the specific procedures established for their area of operation. Employees in these areas will receive equivalent time off during the same week for the hours worked during the official close down period, based on the decision of his/her immediate supervisor. Hours worked before and/or after the close down do not qualify for equivalent time off.
Staff members who do not come to work or leave the college at their own discretion due to inclement weather when the college is not officially closed down will be required to use vacation time, or forgo their pay for those hours not worked. The absence will be considered excused. Supervisors may require that time lost from work be made up if the workload in their department makes this necessary.
