Happel receives CoSIDA award 
Larry Happel (marketing and media relations) was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to receive the 2006 Warren Berg Award at its annual workshop July 3. The award is given annually to a CoSIDA college division member who has made outstanding contributions to the field of college sports information, and who, by his or her activities, has brought dignity and prestige to the profession. Happel is a 27-year sports information veteran and attended the CoSIDA workshop in Nashville, Tenn., July 1-5. Hartman performs at festival
During June, Mark Hartman (music) played violin in the festival orchestra at the 14th annual Shenendoah Valley Bach Festival on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. Performances included Bach’s B minor mass, the Christmas Oratorio and Mozart’s Symphony number 38. During the festival, Hartman also performed on jazz guitar with pianist and arranger Jeremy Wall, a founding member of the fusion group Spyro Gyra.
Kleven at seminar
Terry Kleven (religion) attended the Marquette Summer Seminar in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at Marquette University June 8-9. The topic of this year’s seminar was “The Posterior Analytics and Aristotelian Science.” This seminar is organized by the Midwest Seminar in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy and the Aquinas and the Arabs Project.
Central College First Responders 
Several Central College employees recently passed the first responder exam. Training included classroom hours and hands-on training. All first responders passed practical and written tests and are both state and nationally certified. All are CPR certified and able to responsibly respond to campus emergencies as well as off-campus emergencies until an ambulance team arrives. Those who completed training are Tom DeYoung, Twylah Van Roekel, Craig Roose, Don Dop, Gerald Pleima and Jean DeGraff (all facilities management), Gwendolyn Krueger (VSC stockroom manager) and Jenny Owens ’08. Tom Hostetter (facilities management) is the director of the first responders and a paramedic specialist. He volunteers his time and skills to the Pella Ambulance Service. A special thanks to the first responders organizational committee, which includes Krueger, Greg Gilmore (athletics), Susan Schippers (dining services), Marge Zondervan (health center) and Hostetter as well as the financial support of Central, which made this all possible.
Roberts featured on PBS, awarded at festival
Brian Roberts (art) was the featured artist for the Iowa Artists Series shown on “Living in Iowa” on PBS May 18-19. The segment aired a studio visit to his Pella workshop-garage. It will be rebroadcast in November.
Roberts was awarded the 1st place award of achievement at the Iowa Sculpture Festival in Newton, Iowa, June 9-11.
Butt presents GIS information
Anya Butt (natural science) gave a presentation on the GIS certification process to become a GIS professional at the annual Iowa Counties Information Technology meeting in Mason City June 15.
Breckenridge performs
On June 17, Carol lei Breckenridge (music) gave a clavichord performance at the Midwestern Historical Keyboard Society at the University of Notre Dame.
Wilkinson casting director, works with summer program
Ann Wilkinson (theatre) served as casting director for the feature film The Final Season, which wrapped last week in the Cedar Rapids area. The film stars Sean Astin, Powers Booth and Larry Miller. She currently is working with the Pella Community Center’s summer youth theatre program.
