The Producers
All are invited to the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines for The Producers Friday, Dec. 10. A preshow reception in the west balcony lounge of the Civic Center begins at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Cost is $61 per person. RSVP to the alumni office by Nov. 12. Fall home cleanup
The Central student chapter of Habitat for Humanity is available for yard work, home cleaning or other fall cleanup tasks in exchange for a free will donation. This service will be available until Wednesday, Nov. 24. To schedule or to receive more information, please contact Luke Baehr at ext. 7180.


The annual Blood Screening dates will be:

Institute of Extended Education initiates summer program
A new summer program for K-12 teachers and coaches, initiated by Central’s Institute of Extended Education, received an outstanding first-year enrollment of 247 graduate students. Three graduate credit courses, Achieving Peak Performance, Developing Excellence in Others and Classroom Strategies in Math and Literacy, were taught at 13 sites across Iowa and in London, England. Educators and coaches used these courses for license renewal and towards graduate degrees. Instructors included Matt Diehl (student support services) and Diane Van Wyngarden (academic affairs). The program is expected to expand next summer.


Athletic training education program granted accreditation
The Central College athletic training education program was granted accreditation in September from The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

CAAHEP is the largest programmatic/specialized accreditor in the health sciences field. In collaboration with its committees on accreditation, CAAHEP reviews and accredits more than 2,000 educational programs in 21 health science occupations across the United States and Canada.

Central College began pursing accreditation in 1999 and submitted candidacy application in October 2000. The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Educational Task Force recommendations were implemented in January stating all athletic training graduates must complete an accredited program.

Roe to be grand marshal
President David Roe will be the grand marshal of the Marion County Veterans’ Day Parade in Knoxville, Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 3:30 p.m.


Leadership conference
John Edwards
(athletics), Abby Gonzales(college relations) and Vivian Rippentrop(academic affairs) attended a conference Wednesday, Oct. 20, titled Living Leadership in Des Moines.


Pavlat attends sports medicine meeting
This summer, Dave Pavlat (exercise science) attended the 51st annual American College of Sports Medicine meeting. He participated in a certification and accreditation colloquium which discussed how exercise science programs can become accredited and how that effects the Health/Fitness Instructor (HFI) certification currently offered. He also attended the annual certification directors meeting.

Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins publishers contracted with Pavlat to write a 300-question test bank for their new publication Sports and Exercise Nutrition 2nd edition by McArdle, Katch and Katch. This test bank will be used as a part of their interactive Internet site for the book.

Photography exhibit by Freed and Huck
“Daring to Be,” a photography exhibit by Jann Freed (economics/accounting/management) and George Ann Huck ( Yucatan program), is on display at the Greater Iowa Credit Union in Ames until Monday, Nov. 15. It will be on display at the College of Design at Iowa State University until Friday, Dec. 3. On Monday, Oct. 25, Freed spoke about the project in Ames at the annual Yucatan Partners meeting from which a grant was received last spring to help with the costs of having an exhibit in Merida, Yucatan, in April.

Freed published
The second part of Freed’s article published in the October issue of the Administrator: Practical Wisdom for Higher Education Executives titled “Continuous Improvement on Our Campus — and Yours” will be published in the November issue.


Booth and Ibbotson complete boiler room training
Energy center technicians David Booth and Bob Ibbotson (both facilities management) recently completed the boiler room training course conducted at DMACC’s Newton campus. This training included low pressure boiler and peripheral system operations, as well as boiler room safety practices. Booth and Ibbotson are responsible for the efficient/safe operation and preventative maintenance of our central heating plants located at the physical plant and Kuyper Athletic Complex.  


Johnson, Franks and Chen attend annual meeting
Mark Johnson  and Robert Franks (both computer science) attended and made presentations at the Iowa Undergraduate Computer Science Consortium Saturday, Oct. 23, at Drake University in Des Moines. Xi Chen (physics and computer science) also attended the annual meeting.


Martin attends annual library association conference
Robin Martin (library) attended the American Library Association’s annual conference in June in Orlando, Fla. She participated in the pre-conference, Academic Library Assessment, and began a three-year appointment serving on  ALA’s College Library Section Leadership Committee.


Breckenridge at University of Oklahoma
Carol lei Breckenridge (music) played a recital on Sunday, Oct. 24, had classes with students on Monday, Oct. 25, and gave a lecture on 18th-century performance practice at the University of Oklahoma.


Harris appointed three-year term on research review committee
Michael Harris (English) was appointed to and will serve a three-year term on the Fulbright East Africa/Africa Regional Research Review Committee. The review committee read and evaluated 91 applications for Fulbright lecturing and research grants at a meeting at the CIES office in Washington, D.C., Monday, Oct. 25. The committee forwarded approximately one-third of the applications to the respective host countries in Africa for further evaluation. After a third round of committee review, final Fulbright awards will be named. Harris encourages all faculty members at Central to consider applying for a Fulbright grant in their area of specialization.


McNee attends conference
Nancy McNee (modern languages) attended the Strengthening and Valuing Latino Communities in Iowa Conference and the Hispanic Educational Resources Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Historical Building in Des Moines.

Congratulations on the birth of Willemijn Anindita, daughter of Steef Eman (Leiden program director) and Aparajita Dutta, and sister of Florence, born Tuesday, Oct. 19.


Congratulations to Christine Millard (dining services) on the birth of her grandson, Rieley Ronald Brant Oldham, born Monday, Oct. 11. Rieley weighed 8 lbs., 14 oz.


We express our sympathy to staff members Deb Randol (facilities management)on the passing of Deb’s grandmother Norma Hollingshead on Wednesday, Oct. 20, and Ron Hoksbergen (facilities management) on the loss of his sister Charlene Kay Criger from Norwalk also on Oct. 20.

Students help with Central Service Day
Chris Ballew ’06 , Sarah Benedict ’08, Sarah Koebrick ’08, Jessica Martin ’07, David Patterson ’06 and Rachel Spina ’07 participated in Central Service Day, Saturday, Oct. 23, helping clean portions of Hwy 163 in Pella as part of Russ (biology) and Mary (admission) Benedict’s Bat and Shrew Crew.

Professional Activities

Dental, critical illness and life insurance open enrollment
OPEN ENROLLMENT for dental, critical illness and whole life insurance, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 10, in the lower chapel from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Enrollment and plan changes can be done at this time on a walk in basis.


Health Insurance Open Enrollment
Meetings regarding health insurance will be held Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1. Place and specific times will be announced later. 


Lunch and Learn
Facilities management has evolved from being an island of stand-alone systems to a major player in campus technology and will present “From Windmills to Wireless.” Learn how this technology is integrated into the department’s operations, as well as how it helped to achieve a LEED Silver Medal rating for the Vermeer Science Center, the first LEED rated facility in Iowa. The presentation will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, in Vermeer Science Center room 180. Sign-up sheets will be sent through campus mail.


Long-term care insurance
The human resource office is hosting two information/educational meetings on long-term care insurance. The following issues relating to long-term care will be discussed: costs of long-term care, types of care covered, the purpose of a long-term care insurance policy and how to file a claim with a long-term care policy. Dennis Hartog, a certified senior adviser, will lead the presentations. This is an informational meeting only and NOT for the purpose of selling long-term care insurance. Employees, spouses and other family members are invited to attend. The meeting is Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Graham Conference Center in room 2 from 3-4 p.m. and again from 6-7 p.m.


Staff Christmas banquet
is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 9. Please reserve this date on your calendars.


Christmas/New Year Holiday Schedule
The campus will be closed Thursday-Tuesday, Dec. 23-28. Offices will be open Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 29-30, and again be closed on Friday, Dec. 31.
