The Campaign for Central Phase II
The first phase of The Campaign for Central concludes June 30 surpassing its original goal of $50 million six months early. July 1 begins Phase II of the campaign with goals to raise an additional $36 million for a campaign total of $86.8 million.

“In surpassing the largest campaign goal in Central’s history more than half a year ahead of schedule, we sensed an opportunity to continue to build a bright future for Central’s second sesquicentury,” said David Roe (president). “Accordingly, we are launching Phase II to The Campaign for Central and concentrating on our two most urgent capital improvement needs as well as on building the financial strength of the college through increasing both the overall level of the endowment fund and the level of annual financial support to the college.”

The five-year Phase II capital projects include an education/psychology building, estimated at $9 million, and a track and football field replacement, estimated at $2.5 million. The goal also includes plans to raise $9 million for The Central Fund and increase the endowment by $12.5 million. Central’s building maintenance endowment goal is $3 million.

Central students help in Des Moines
Central College students volunteered their time to help the Des Moines Tax Credit and Asset Building Coalition with its Earned Income Tax Credit campaign. The service provides free tax assistance and asset building opportunities to area residents. Some students did this project for credit and others did it simply to volunteer with a worthwhile project. Kevin Den Adel (accounting), Bob Maurer (accounting), Keith Yanner (political science) and Sam Mate-Kodjo (Spanish) served as supervising professors for students who did the project for credit.

The project was interdisciplinary — students from accounting actually worked with the tax returns; students from Spanish served as hosts at the clinics that served Spanish-speakers; and students from political science helped with a variety of duties. Students who participated included: Erica Argullin ’05, Derek Deminsky ’08, Ryan Elliott ’06, Matt Harre ’06, Scott Huisman ’05, Justin Knock ’08, Daniela Martisovitsova ’05, Thad Nelson ’07, Renee Ripperger ’06, Matthew Stump ’05, Aaron Vincent ’08 and Jenni Wedewer ’05.
