  Students Doing Interesting Things

Listed below are few of the projects Pam Ewell’s (education) students completed spring term in Ed Tech/Instructional Tech. According to Ewell, this is exemplary work and productivity. “It is amazing to see the progression of learning with various instructional technologies and how productive our students can be when they put their mind to it,” she said.

Joe Schwanebeck ’06 created his own interactive software for teaching music theory and ear training. He also created an electronic tutorial for using the software, Camtasi Studio. Both are available on CD for viewing.

Melissa Freeseman ’06 created an online supportive teaching Web site for high school social studies, particularly for teaching of U.S. history. Her Web site is on CD and will soon be on Central’s Web.

Rob Robison ’06 surveyed middle school math teachers to better understand how a supportive math Web site might help them. He then created a Web site based on their suggestions. See his math resource Web site at http://www.central.edu/homepages/robisonr1/myweb/index.htm.

Carrie Roll ’05 created a unit for teaching Spanish celebrations. Her Web site provides resources for teaching this unit. See it at http://www.central.edu/homepages/rollc1 (take note of her reference to teaching competencies).

Jaimie Adkins ’07 mentored a professor in the language department. To be a mentor, she researched and read about the process of mentoring. She then began the mentoring experience with the professor on a weekly basis. Adkins reflected on this experience weekly in her journal. Some of her findings discuss the simultaneous renewal that occurs as a mentor. The mentored professor was extremely pleased with this opportunity and suggested that Ewell create similar programs for others to experience.

Forty new Web sites were created by Ewell’s students showing how educators can use the Internet to communicate and interact with students and parents. Their Web sites intend to be used in the future to showcase their portfolio and experiences in teacher education. Many other students created teaching units that exemplify sound and meaningful integration of instructional technologies. Next year the students will use their Web sites to demonstrate their skills and competencies in teaching.

Leading Others Through Change — Blur is the speed of change. The World Future Society projects there will be more change in this decade, than in the past 200 years! And in the past 200 years we’ve seen the advent of electricity, automobiles, computers, television, electronic retailing, ballpoint pens, colored margarine and jet aircraft to name a few.

Even higher education has changed. There are more degree programs, more competition for students and higher costs. In some institutions, learners custom design their degree program. Students can learn online. They want PPT. And most colleges have learned, or are learning, how to serve both the traditional and non-traditional students. Customer service is an increasing priority for higher education.

This means that leading others through change is a basic leadership competency. It is as important as preparing and managing a budget, selecting and guiding classroom instructors or showing learners how to learn. Yet few graduate schools prepare future higher education leaders in the strategies to effectively lead others through change.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a program where participants can gain new insights and skills in how to lead others through change.
