  Faculty/Staff News

Ellie DuPre
(biology) walked away with top faculty honors for the 2003-04 academic year May 3, winning the David Crichton Memorial Award.

The award, memorializing the long-time chemistry professor David Crichton, recognizes a member of the faculty whose exemplary teaching and scholarship shaped the intellectual development of Central College students. Criteria for winning the award is based on the professor’s ability to challenge students to reach their highest potential by offering extraordinary curricular experiences and an emphasis on an interdisciplinary curriculum which exposes students to new ideas, develops students’ curiosity for independent research and study, and underscores strong writing and speaking skills.

Five professors earned Dr. John Wesselink Awards for Outstanding Performance. The award is named for the former Central College president (1925-34) and has been endowed by his family in his name. Winners were: Phil George (education) for community service; Mary Stark (English) for institutional service; Keith Yanner (political science) for professional growth and development; and Russ Benedict (biology) and Dick Bowzer (exercise science) each won for teaching.

Sylvia Rode (German) was honored with a Huffman Award for Oustanding Support of International Education for her work with the office of International Education and Central’s international student community.

At a separate ceremony, President David Roe rewarded employees for upholding Central’s service standards of respect, integrity, responsiveness, safety and energy at his college update April 26. Winners included: respect, Cyndi Atkins (college relations), Anna Boat (computing services) and Del Wichhart (physical plant); integrity, Lisa Hetzel (student life) and Garry Laidlaw (athletics); responsiveness, Terri Crumley (admission) and Marilyn Vrban (academic affairs); safety, Sharon Haning (human resources) and John Ritsema (campus safety); and energy, Mary Benedict (admission) and Dave Sutphen (development.)

A special award for overall service was given to Donna Newendorp (student financial planning) because she had been nominated in several different categories.

Larry Happel (college relations) is one of nine sports information directors to receive a 25-Year Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America. This award is given to CoSIDA members who have completed 25 years in the profession. Recipients will receive their awards Monday, June 28, at the organization’s Kickoff Luncheon to its 2004 workshop in Calgary, Alberta.

Happel is in his 25th year as Central’s SID and also serves as the school’s associate director of college relations. He took over as full-time SID while still an undergraduate at Central in 1979 and completed requirements for his bachelor’s degree in 1981. He later took on additional responsibilities as the college’s public relations director for seven years and as publication director for six years before receiving his current title in 1999. During the 2003-04 academic year, Happel served as a visiting assistant in the men’s sports information office at the University of Tennessee, returning to Central this month.

Named to a three-year term as a college division representative to the CoSIDA board of directors in 2002, Happel has also served as a member of the CoSIDA writing contest and allied organizations committees, and has been on the special awards committee since 1999. He’s received 21 CoSIDA publications awards and six writing contest awards, with nine “best in the nation” citations. While at Central the Dutch have won 11 NCAA Division III team championships. Happel has served as host SID for five NCAA national championship finals and for numerous other NCAA events, including 20 Division III football playoff games.

Lori Witt (history) was a judge May 3 for senior individual exhibits at the National History Day in Iowa competition. The event was held at the state historical building in Des Moines. High school students from around the state enter exhibits, research papers, documentaries or dramatic presentations in the competition. The top two winners in each category take their entries on to National History Day in Washington, D.C., June 12-17. Central junior Ethan Vaas served as a judge and as an event assistant for both junior and senior history day in Iowa events. In addition, he and another Central junior, Jamie Hosek, helped judge history day events at the district level in Iowa this year. Vaas will go on to intern with the National History Day in Washington, D.C., this summer. Bette Brunsting (communications emeritus) also participated as a judge at the May 3 National History Day in Iowa.

Janine Fontana (physical plant) attended a Datastream user’s group conference in Greenville, S.C., May 2-5. The conference focus was on MP2, our facility team’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

The photography exhibit, Daring to Be: Portraits of Mexican Women Leaders, by Jann Freed (business management) and George Ann Huck (international education) had an opening reception in Merida, Yucatan, on April 28. There were 25 of the 30 women in attendance and this was the first time they had viewed the photographs. The photographs were on display at the University of Yucatan until May 16 when they moved to the Marista University. This was possible because of a grant from the Iowa Sister States.

Lowell Olivier (conference services) attended the annual conference for the Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors - International in Vancouver, British Columbia. This was the last meeting Lowell attended as the Regional Director of Region 6 (Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa) for the organization.

  Students Doing Interesting Things

A group of students from Central’s vocal jazz combos put their talents to good use on April 24, performing a free concert for the kids at Orchard Place in Des Moines. Orchard Place is a group home for teens troubled by emotional or behavioral problems that have left them unable to cope with life in the regular world. Thousands of Iowa’s teens have called Orchard Place home and been able to get help there over the years. Kristin Sullivan ’03, an employee of Orchard Place, said Central singers invited kids up on the stage and made them feel very warm and welcome. “It was so wonderful that it made me cry,” she said. Students who performed at Orchard Place include: seniors Andrea Caquelin and Jordan Mayland; juniors Jill Osheim and Gina Forbes; sophomores Jacque Wilke and Mike Hasset; and freshmen Dan De Haan, Mike Dusseldorp, Stephanie Sasscer and Todd Casey.
